Calling all USN Landing Ship Medium (LSM/LSMR) & Inshore Fire Support Ship (IFS) fans

I'm opening this for all inshore fire support vessel fans. Pictured, is USS Clarion River LSMR-409, and USS Carronade IFS-1

I picked up a Lindberg "Bobtail Cruiser" kit, to include in an N scale (1:160) model railroad module. The kit, a 1:172 scale (close enough for government work), as built, left much to be desired, so I started a rebuild, adding what detail I could find, or build. The crew of Carronade, has a website that has lots of photos of crew members, with "detail behind".
The pictures posted here are of the "out of box" model, in drydock, and a shot of some of the changes already made.

I picked up the Loose Cannon 1/700 LSMR as a simple intro to 1/700.
It says a dazzle camo scheme measure 31/17L using colors US 16,22,23,24 (& gives WEM equivalents).
However there is no drawing of the scheme -- can someone point me to a source forwhat this scheme might look like ?

I don't know where Loose Cannon got their information, but the only identifiable pattern I've ever seen on LSMRs is 10L.
I've never seen 17L, and there are phots with a pattern I cannot identify (neither 10L or 17L).
10L was used with both solid and "fuzzy" color borders. Check out the pictures on Navsource.

Thank you very much for the info and the links.
I have been trying for two days to get the full size pictures down -- the site seems to just stall out halfway thru a picture.
Is this common ? The full size images are only 150k or so so it shouldn't be like this unless the site has a bandwidth of a half-dozen bits or so ....

Thanks, I managed to outlast the server snail today and got all 4 photos.

The 17L pattern is the one I want. I have found data/photos on all 12 LSM(R) and it appears that 188, 194, and 196 were in 31/17L and the other 9 in 31/10L. I also learned from the photos that there were variants on rocket configuration, so I will model 188 because the kit rocket config is closest to that.

Could you contact me offline and/or provide source data for those pattern photos? Especially three you think are in measure 17L? The Navsource photos I used for them all look very clearly like measure 10L to me, but I am certianly open to other views and would like my personal listings to be as accurate as possible.

I have been looking for some diagrams with measurements so I can build a radio control model of a FSF-1 sea fighter built by nichols bros of Freeland,Washington. Have general outside measurements but need inside and pontoons size,etc.

Jepot, When did you get that? I REALLY NEED some of those LSMs. Also, I'm pretty sure LSMs didn't carry 3 inch guns. More like twin Bofors 40mm on the bow.

It�s been a while since anyone posted anything about this topic, so maybe this request will get things moving again. A while back, I started scratchbuilding a 1/48th scale model of the LSM-59. I�m a member of the USS LSM/LSMR Association and I want to be able to bring this model to the reunions. I�m building the model as the LSM-59 appeared during the invasion of Iwo Jima and pretty soon, I�m going to have to start building the vehicles that were carried aboard her. The tanks and jeeps are the easy part, but she also carried a construction crane. I�ve found photos of them but does anyone know of any drawings that would help?

I think you're going to have to get into the military vehicle sites to find anything on a crane. Its one of those things that we know were there but nobody, except maybe military engineers and cargo types, have much interest in.

I checked a site that has CAD drawings of vehicles but there was nothing on cranes.

Hey Russ,

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and thanks for the tips! I'm thinking I'm going to have to do what you suggested; buy a model of a crane and scale it up.

I took another look at the list of vehicles I'm going to need for my LSM model and it's a bit longer than I remembered. at Iwo, LSM-59 carried 5 Shermans, 5 Jeeps, a 10 ton crane, a bulldozer, a tractor crane, a 6X6 truck, and 3 trailers. Pretty impressive load jammed into such a small ship, eh?

You may have to research the dozer a bit. back then they were on the small side, compared to today
