Attaching PE

I am currently building Dragon's 1/350 Cushing and I want to use the PE that comes with the kit. This will be my first real serious attempt at using the stuff. I previously used the PE on my Panda 1/350 Arleigh Burke that came with the kit but that stuff was much thicker and the results were not that impressive (I only used the PE on the main deck railings).
Can anyone provide some pointers on shaping and attaching it? Any help would be appreciated. I also have the 1/700 Ingraham kit that has PE with it but I think I should probably take a crack at the larger 1/350 before trying 1/700.
