Drawing scale plans

Is there any method or formula for drawing plans? I'm planning on building USS Langley from plans as my first scratchbuild, but there is also a certain coastal passenger liner I'd like to build, for which no plans of any scale exist. Is drawing plans something just for the experts, or is it something possible to do?

Hi ,

there are no formulas but well some methods .

It is very possible to do , but it asks for a lot of knowledge about ships , drawing a profile and some deckviews is easy , drawing the hull lines from those two views is another matter .

The best option is to get some other plans to be checked , to get an idea how hull lines were drawn .

I do some drawings and plans myself , starting from a white page or from a little profile from a book .

the last picture on the album here above is the plan I used to start from .

The Langley you plan to do , is it the first one ( CV-1 ) ? if yes , profile and views from above are available at the "Floating Drydock" , without the hull lines though , but those hull lines could easily be redrawn from the available plans .

Hi,
After looking over this, I think I am going to buy plans for Langley (which is, yes, CV-1) and let the liner wait until after I've build Langley. Then, after studying Langley's plans, I could try my hand at actually drawing my own plans. The liner is a rather unknown ship and the only pictures of it are a couple side-views and one angled front- on shot. Besides the liner, I would also like to create plans for USS Casablanca, IJN Kaga, IJN Zuiho, and a US minesweeper (these might be easier than the liner since more photographs can be found).

Hi,
I was looking around the board and saw your HMS Zinna RC (a very pretty ship), so I'm assuming your USS Jupiter would be RC as well. Langley will probably be in 1:144 scale, as that seems a good size. I would appreciate a little coaching on this project, once I get started. Right now, I'm guessing that will probably be mid October. I have a 1:700 USS Lexington I have to finish first, then I can order the plans.
