1/142 Revell North Sea Fishing Trawler

Post by Red Devil Squadron »

This is the Revell 1/142 scale North Sea Fishing Trawler that I made about a year ago as a break between other projects. I did not select an actual trawler for this build. Instead, I created a fictional vessel named "ATLANTIS" as my subject. I wanted to give this a little different look from a typical trawler, so I made a few changes. The planked deck that came with the kit was replaced with sheet styrene to give it the appearance of a steel deck. The bridge was modified to have round windows rather than square. A scratch built inflatable and outboard motor was used to replace the more traditional small boat that came with the kit. Spare photoetch was used to replace the kit railing and mast ladder. Several other changes and additions were made to enhance details. At first I tried to do some weathering on this project which resulted in a complete disaster and I ended up stripping the entire kit and repainting. My weathering and dry brush skills really suck and I can't seem to get a subtle / realistic look. I didn't attempt any weathering the second time around on this project and just settled for a final coat of Krylon flat to dull the glossy look and help blend the different paints together. Rigging included silk thread, stretched sprue, and some wood ship model thread. Decals include some modified items from the kit along with spares from an old space shuttle kit. Running lights and mast lights are tiny colored & clear glass beads. Thanks for looking. your questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Bill

Nice work on the old Revell classic. Yours is a bit cleaner than mine - mine's a dio of the same ship in dry dock awaiting cleaning, anti-fouling, and the like.

Hello Bill,

Many thanks for your comments. Your Kandahar looks great, the weathering effect really makes for an interesting diorama. How did you manage the rust effect?

Regards,

Bill

What are some basic questions when purchasing a fishing boat? I live on Lake Erie and would like to purchase a fishing boat approx. 12-14 feet. Gas or electric motor? What do I look for as far as rust? What are the best bets for spending about a grand or so? Thank you.
