Calling all Landing Craft Air Cushion hovercraft (LCAC) fans

Post by Model Maniac »

I've waded through this Forum and saw nobody ever posted about the LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion). So I'm gonna post two LCAC at the same time - the American and the Japanese. There was a question on another site about how different they are apart from the markings, which I don't know. Perhaps someone can give some answers.

PS. Tuk and Toom are brothers but they seem to have different style of painting and weathering.

Hello Model Maniac,

Kinda strange because I had posted my LCAC project some time in early 2008. Anyway, here's a snapshot of the finished model of the 1/144 scale model of the Japanese LCAC operating near Okinawa.

BTW, I love the LCAC because it combines armor and naval interests.

Hello Paul,

Nice dio you've there! I wonder what's the armor on it. Your earlier post might have gone lost because of regrouping of forums.
You seem to love building small ships, I see many 1:700 that you're building. I myself prefer 1:350 or bigger scale. Last week I just bought finished Gato & typeVIIC 1:72 at very cheap price ($19 & $16 respectively). This Sunday I'll get a finished Yamato 1:250! b :wave_1:

Hello MM,

The armor tethered on the deck is a Japanese Type-90 MBT (very similar to the US Abrams, slightly smaller). I picked up that tank at a 7-Eleven store in Yokohama together with a very cool self-propelled howitzer for the JSDF. The LCAC can carry one MBT or 11 soft-skinned trucks.

Yes, I would love to build 1/350 scale but I will run out of space to display them very fast. Plus it's cheaper to find ready-made plastic cases to keep 1/700 scale away from dust, rigging and all.

How do you display your large scale ships?

I see, so it's the Type 90 MBT. Your pics are too small, even enlarged it's still hard to see what the tank is.

I recenly bought 3 finished ships at very cheap prices. They're the King George V 1:350 for $8, the type VIIC 1:72 for $16
and Gato Class Submarine 1:72 for $19. This is how I display them. King George V was later on moved into a display case.
For the other two submarines, there's no display case big enough to hold them.

And I'm going to get two more finished ships - the Yamato 1:250 and the Elco80 1:35!

Hello MM,

All I can say is........

Are you planning to build the Trumpeter 1/72 scale LCAC? That should be more in your size preference.

Hi - great looking craft I was wondering apart from the decals, both LCAC's are by Trumpy and I've noticed a price difference of $10.00 on the sale of USMC and JMSDF, apart from the price and the decals, are there any other differences between these 2 LCAC model kit ?

Am I right in that the color I should be painting my LCAC is a flat aluminum?

Yes, you are correct. Flat aluminum it is. Although you may notice in photographs that there are various shades of it. :thumbs_up_1:

What scale will you be building? 1/72 or 1/144?

Thanks for the reply.
I'm going to go with Tamiya XF16~Flat Aluminium for the main bodies, XF17 Sea Blue for the bridge roof tops and vents, XF63 German Gray for the deck, and lastly X1 Black for the bladder. with some green, red, and blue thrown in for the vent tops.

I'm building in 1/350th

This is going to be for my USS Bataan. I've still got a lot of work to go.
Again, thanks for the come back.

If you conduct a little search on the web for the trumpeter 1/72 scale offering you will find photos of the painting guide and many beautiful builds for inspiration. :cool_1: :cool_1:

I am sorry I am not posting any of the stuff here but I do not want to create any possible copyright issues.
