Character actor Ron Masak played a Navy communications man in two movies.
In ICE STATION ZEBRA, Masak played submarine USS Tigerfish's radioman Paul Zabrinczski as the Tigerfish carries a team of spies to recover a Russian spy satellite's film capsule at the Arctic research station Ice Station Zebra.
In TORA! TORA! TORA!, Masak played battleship USS Nevada's communications officer Lieutenant Laurence Ruff during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Nevada was the only ship underway during the attack and Japanese bombers, which were supposed to bomb Pearl Harbor's fuel reserve tanks, hit the moving battleship with five bombs hoping to sink it and block the channel. Because most of the Nevada's senior officers were not onboard, Ruff was named "acting navigator", and he managed to beach the Nevada so it could not be sunk which kept the waterway open. It also saved Pearl Harbor's vital fuel storage reserves for the Navy's Pacific Fleet which probably shortened the war by a year.
