Hello there, although I haven't bothered with the pix, there are several strange looking research ships around the world, some with 4 huge legs, some that sink allowing oil rig platforms to slide off, some made completely of concrete, the odd and strange type of shipping is rather eye catching.

Explanation (this is NOT phoroshot):<br />USS Tucker (DD-374) with canvas hung from her masts, during the later 1930s. This is probably an experiment in using makeshift sails to extend the ship's low speed cruising range. U.S. Naval Historical Center Photograph. (A note from Sinclair Geraing; &quot; As far as I can tell, the notion of, essentially, spreading the ship's awning vertically to make a sail was entirely LCDR Gearings idea.&quot;)

Well, we can't forget the battleship whose gunners got so demoted that they were reduced to using 5"/38 for their main guns, eh?

Strange but practical

FLIP was floating insturmentation platform. Flip up where it is needed so that you can do experiments on the water column. It makes a lot of sence when you know what it is used for.
