SuperFerry 9 sinks off the coast pf Zamboanga del Norte last September 7 at dawn. 9 are dead and 33 missing. More than 800 are resqued
Some passengers were later found near the ship after it sank. Another passenger was found around a kilometer from the site after two days drifting in the water.
Another sad loss of one of the largest shipping companies in the Philippines.
Just a year ago, MV Princess of the Stars also capsized and sank leaving more than 600 passengers missing and presumed dead. There were only 50+ survivors. She sank at the height of typhoon Fengshen. It was owned by Sulpicio Lines Inc.
As of now, the wreck is still present.
Another ship owned by SuperFerry, the SuperFerry 14 sank last 2004 due to a terrorist bomb placed on a small TV set onboard the ship. It was linked to the Abu Sayyaf group, which is also linked the Al Qaeda militants. Thebomb exploded just minutes after leaving the port of Manila. She capsized after hours of firefighting but was righted months after the attack for further investigation. More than 60 were killed immediately. Another hundred were missing while the rest of the 700 passengers were rescued. It was the 2nd worst terrorist attack at sea.
Another one was said to be "the world's worst peacetime maritime tragedy" It was the MV Dona Paz, also owned by Sulpicio Lines Inc. It occured in December 1980s, just days before Christmas when she embarked her trip carrying more than 4000 passengers. She collided with the MT Vector, a tanker that carried products from Caltex Philippines. Both ships immediately caught fire and sent explosions running throughout the 2 ships. Dona Paz sank after 2 hours with only 24 survivors out of 4000 and only 2 crewmembers out of the 30+ on the Vector which sank 4 hours later.
