HMS Inflexible (Dean's Marine)

Post by Schmidt »

On April 22 the day had come: I was the lucky one to get the first ever sold kit of Deans Marines most ambitious and challenging projet HMS Inflexible. I got it directly from Mr. Dean who signed the kit with a big One.
And then for the rest of the passing year I did not find the time to look into the box for a second time.
I catch that up now and present the result:

That much and more is what you get:

Image

The hull is a well moulded part in glass fibre reinforced laminate. The underwater hull section has simulated plating, the upper section has hatches, bulleye markings and so on.

Image

The decks and the superstructure are to be built from styrene plastic. The edges are given in different colours.

Image

A very detailed and elaborate instruction tells you what to do step by step. A CD with photos from a model under construction is said to be available soon.

Image

You have several choices how to build the wooden decks. The normal kit has decals from vinyl with the planks printed on.

Image

But there is also a new invention by Deans Marine available. A prefabricated wooden deck with laser-cut edges between the planks. The deck is held together by a backing film and can be glued to its surface as one. Im sure I will try THIS. It must save quite a lot of time!

The boats are from deep-drawn styrene. I think the quality of the result depends on how much detailing work you want to invest.

Image

Among the well moulded parts the gun turrets and their surface are the most convincing ones. Imagine what work you would have to do building that terrace by plan.

Image

There are a lot of fitting parts. They all have flash an need some treatment. Nevertheless the quality seems good to me. There are even detailed beams for the toepedo guard net.

My great question before to begin is: with or without the rigging?
Inflexible carried a complete brig rigging during her first years of duty. Admirality at that tiome did not have too much confidence in the ships without sails und feared the crew to be bored. Later the senseless and annoying masts had to fall.
I know only two photos of Inflexible with the full rigging. But perhaps modellers or experts from the UK can help me. I would be deeply grateful!!
Of course it will be difficult to build an operating model with the full rigging. Perhaps the terrace could be build removable to maintain the motor and the rc parts.
I hope I can lay the keel between the years.

Hello Schmidt First off you English is fine and welcome . Good to see a vessel on the board that it quite different . It may be of some help if you can aquire a copy of RA Burt's publication "British battleships 1889 - 1904" This has some good references to Inflexible . Having inflexible as a rigged vessel could present some difficulties as a working model non the less a great subject either working or static . Best of luck with your build and please keep us up dated.

Hi Burkhard,

nice to see you here. I really like the Inflexible but would also recommend to do her without the rigging.

Looking at the kit I am a little bit disappointed. The moulded boats don't look sooooo convincing and the wooden deck is just horrible. I know you are on the neverending quest for finding the way to get good-looking decks in half an hour, but I#m shure there simply is no holy grail. A satisfying deck (at least in 1:100 and bigger) will always need time and work. And why not: The path is the aim. The laser-cut thing from the kit has the same disadvantage as any other laser-cut deck-things: It's simply a continuous board with prints with the only difference that these prints are cuts. This may be acceptable in 1:350 but in 1:100 it just looks awful. It are those slight differences in shade that make "plank by plank"-decks look good and that can't be achieved by a pre-cut deck. Maybe Dean's would have done better to add a big pile of cut planks for self-planking (like in the MZ kits). THIS would have safed (at least some) time AND given a satisfying deck.

Cheers, happy X-mas and a happy new year (the lifeboat-hulls for the Wespe will drag on till next year as I still haven't the plan for the Gig III. But there is hope: wefalck told me, he will scan the page from the Brix inbetween the days)

Hi Egberth
I know we will never ever be able to find a final answer to the question what the best deck on earth (or sea) should look like. In general I agree with your living-wood-theorie. In fact I built some decks this way. But I think there are other styles of deck-building and I also do like the very uni-coloured decks with sharp und dark edges. You can love one girl and must not hate all the others....
The photo above does NOT show the wooden deck but the vinyl print which is in fact not really worth a discussion! Meanwhile I got the wooden deck, and I will show pictures as soon as possible. The pre-cut decks have some other adavantages I appreciate very much. They show you the correct position of the superstructure AND the already have what is so difficult to built: Fischungen. (Sorry, can't find the English expression!)
Photos will show.
Season's greetings!

Hmmm Burkhard, do you really think that this is even a little bit better than the vinyl-thing? It's just the same like all those laser-printed decks. For myself I wouldn't like to disfigure a potential nice model by using a below-average deck. This may cause a little bit more work but you know it's worthwhile (Hey, in case of the Ting Yuen you realized it also).

And always remember:

Cheers und einen guten Rutsch

Let me add my request for photos of Ting Yuen model? It would be greatly appreciated!
