This arguement used to be more important before the introduction of the fictitious and overpowered DDX. In the old days, the arguement was that Somers had four turrets earlier, and had three torp slots, while the Gearing had only three turrets and two torp slots. The Gearing, however, gets a remodel at level 24 to become the Timmerman, which gives it four gunslots with enough room for the dual 5"/54s or dual 6"/53, at the cost of zero torp space. The Somers can only equip 5"/38s (and smaller).
With the advent of the DDX, which has 5 gunslots and one torp slot, the Gearing is no longer a viable option. The DDX is level 26, while the one advantage of the Timmerman (the 5"/54) is level 29, so it is rather pointless to go Gearing route now. The DDX can fit the 5"/54 L, with two binds (50 rounds/bind), giving it a CL1-like firepower and range, while maintaining a DD-sized profile.

It used to be (about 6months ago) that the Q was banned from rooms more often than Torpwhores.
the Q rocks, the L stinks. the DDX is a good ship, not as nice as Z99 but who cares when you HA in a DDX you get used to it so you can make a good HA Oakland. A HA oakland is the highest dammage per minnute ship in the game (including the BB4's)
