USS Pittsburgh CA-72 33/18d
USS Pittsburgh CA-72 June 1945.
Measure 33 calls for 5-L Light Gray and 5-O Ocean Gray on vertical faces and 20B Deck Blue and 5-O Ocean Gray on the Decks.
I read somewhere on line (I didn't copy it down) that Pittsburgh was painted in 5-H Haze Gray and 5-P Pale Gray insted of Light Gray and Ocean Gray.
I also read another post ( I didn't copy it down either) some time ago that the third color used was determinded by the number of the ship. Even numbered ships would be painted with 5-N Navy Blue and odd numbered ships would use Black as the third color.
Can anyone tell me what colors, both vertical and horizontal that Pittsburgh was painted in June 1945.

Shipcamouflage.com database has her in MS33/18d in 1944
That would be Vertical Surfaces Light Grey 5-L and Ocean Grey 5-0
Horizontal Surfaces in the pattern (18d) with Ocean Grey 5-0 and Deck Blue 20-B
18d is at http://www.shipcamouflage.com/DesignShe ... 8Class.jpg
MS33 is at http://www.shipcamouflage.com/measure_33.htm
Database is at http://www.shipcamouflage.com/usn_ca.htm
and MS 21 in 1945

Not quite true; she was in dazzle until she lost her bow in the June '45 typhoon. She was most likely in the neutral Ms 21 following repairs..Russ2146 wrote:and MS 21 in 1945

Tracy,
I knew you would be able to say precisely when in 1945 she was changed to MS-21, while it would be impractical for shipcamouflage.com to show that for all the ships in the database.

Re: USS Pittsburgh CA-72 33/18d
Well, we could start doing it; I experimented with it on the CV page a bit, but we'd need to widen the tables a bit I think, which I've resisted in order to maintain compatibility with older systems and mobile devices. But, in this case I think it would probably be fine to widen things by 100-200 pixels and start popping in dates as we come across them. I've also noodled about trying to do some sort of graph such as what DestroyerHistory does, but I want to pull it off in HTML and not as an image so it loads faster and is compatible with more devices. I just haven't sat down to do that yet.
Note that I did not answer Gordon's question; I suspect that's something John or Randy (if I can coax him in) will have to do.

Tracy,
How about double spacing the Horizontal grid spaces and showing the specific date of the MS change-over, if known, on the second line, below the MS designation?

Re: USS Pittsburgh CA-72 33/18d
The horizontal spacing is set at this time more by the amount of data, and I started using the second and third lines for revisions. So what I am leaning towards is a cell that looks like:
MS12 Mod (February 15)
MS21 (May 21)
MS33 (December)
This is what I did for the CV page, but if you look at CV-13's 1944 entry, even with this some of the entries are really "wide"

Founf some pix in NHHC's online photo section.
I don't know about you but I see three colors/shades on the hull, more like Ms32

Re: USS Pittsburgh CA-72 33/18d
In the interest of getting you an answer, I'm going to take an educated guess. As we all know, the fastest way to find the truth on the internet is to say the WRONG THING, so I'm sure that If I'm wrong I'll get called on it ten minutes after hitting 'post"Gordon Bjorklund wrote:USS Pittsburgh CA-72 June 1945.

Horizontal surfaces: it appears according to this photo that there was a deck pattern, and one that matches the design sheet, so my guess is Deck Blue and Ocean Grey for the decks.
Vertical Surfaces: Measure 33 was the LIGHT pattern system, which would have lighter colors than the Medium[/URL] or DARK pattern system. So I agree that it should be 5-P and 5-H; a random sampling of MS 33 design sheets bears this out:
http://www.shipcamouflage.com/DesignShe ... F_CL-4.jpg
http://www.shipcamouflage.com/DesignShe ... _CL-51.jpg
Plus the copy of SHIPS-2 I have has color plates that all reference 5-P and 5-H for their Ms 33 color plates. The third color is also probably 5-N if we use these sources.
Note that I even bolded things to make any mistakes more apparent!

Russ2146, Tracy White,
Thank you for you answers to my question and I apologize for taking so long to acknowledge your posts. I decided to go with the Ms 33 colors of 5L Light Gray,5O Ocean Gray and 5N Navy Blue. I'm using Testors Acryl paints and I liked the contrast between the 5N Navy Blue and the 5O Ocean Gray best.
