Need Advice on the Trumpeter 1/350 CV10 Yorktown

I am just about finished building my first ever ship, a 1/350 Tamiya Yamato, just a few small pieces to go and the rigging. I did not use PE, just an out of box build. The results on the Yamato are not as good as what I see here but far better than what I expected going into it, I am very pleased with how it is looking.

I would like to build a 1/350 Trumpeter CV-10 Yorktown next. I am not concerned about the paintwork, I can handle that. I would like to open all hangar doors and try to do nice hangar deck and add some more aircraft. Do you think the Yorktown kit itself would be too much for someone with limited experience? I really want to try it, I believe that you never know what you can do till you try.

I would like to try some PE on the Yorktown kit but have no experience with it, and am afraid that I would definitely be getting in over my head. Any thoughts?

Keep in mind that I am only looking to do a decent build, with reasonable accuracy, not looking to build an award winner, just a nice display piece.

I reckon that if you want to try P/E then go get a Tamiya Flecher and have a go on that then jump in on the carrier if you painted the hanger walls pink maybe only you would know that its not right ?? have a go

Hi Steve, as County Class said start small with the PE - just till you are comfortable using it.I might suggest using an Hold & Fold (available from The Small Shop) when working with PE, not essential - but very useful.

Opening a carriers doors/shutters might seem a bit daunting at first but it very straight forward. I personally use the method where you scribe around the openings repeatedly with the tip of your scalpel.Another way is to drill a series of holes around the opening and then cut away the waste plastic.

The carrier out-of-the-box shouldn't be of any problem for anyone who has done some modeling. Having handled the Yamato, I think it shouldn't be much of a problem for you. (If a 15-16 year old like me could do it, I'm sure you can too )

Thank you all for the advice, really do appreciate it. I'll check out the Fletcher Kit and maybe try it as a learning experience. I may pick up both a Fletcher & Yorktown & PE for both - that way while working on the Fletcher I can thoroughly read the Yorktown instructions and get an idea of where I want to start on that.

I have also thought about going ahead with the Yorktown, getting a GMM PE set and only using the parts that I feel I can use successfully - doubt if I'll do that though.

County Class - I am not really following the idea of a pink hangar deck, but it may just be me, I can be bit slow sometimes. I have vast experience in restoration of vintage toys & antique trains(pre-war Lional, AF, etc). I can handle the paint work without a problem, I am really not concerned about that part of it.

Anyone know where I can find a photo of a Yorktown as an out of box build with hangar deck open? I could not find one in the gallery. I'd like to get an idea of the appearance of a built kit with PE vsa kit w/o PE.
