Finnish corvette Karjala

Post by finnfan »

I have just started a scratch build of the 1960s corvette Karaja which is currently a museum ship at Turku.

I visited her in 2008 and took many pictures. At that time she had the camouflage applied when she was with the missile boat squadron and had the logo of that unit still applied. However, the original paintwork had been overpainted in several places with what looked like non-standard paint, which confused the pattern. In addition, with her moored next to the quayside and with Keihassalmi alongside, it is difficult to tell how the pattern appears on the lower hull. She also carried the numeral 04 in white on her lower hull.

Since then I have found a colour picture of her which I think must have been taken in the 1980s which shows a different camouflage scheme and the numeral placed higher on the hull and painted in the darkest of the camouflage colours.

I also have a postcard of her from Forum Marinum which shows her in overall light grey, but I would like to show her in camouflage.

I would be most grateful if any of our Finnish correspondents could help out with pictures which will show either of these camouflage schemes clearly.

Thanks in advance
