Calling all British WW1 Submarine fans
Starting to read 'British Submarines of the Great War' by Edwyn Gray and wondering what's actually out there kit wise - HP Models do a couple of K Boats and M class Submarines, but are there any others out there, especially the E Class Submarine?

Seeming as there doesn't appear to be much out there - any interest in a 1/350 or 1/700 E class Submarine, resin with photo etch?

Both scales for me...preferably 1-350 given the small size of the sub in reality.

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Regarding the existence of models of RN subs in WWI. Yes, HP does some K and M class subs but sadly I can't seem to find any indication of any other of the servicing types in WWI. And it's not the lack of documentation/plans....most likely the lack of interest among modellers for such submarines. I for once find them most interesting and even more their battle reports during the WWI. The book you mentioned is quite good....I've read it a couple of years ago.

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Sorry, above was me - any preferences as to full-hull or waterline? I know a couple of resin and metal kit manufacturers and considering either seeing if they're interested, or using their contacts for myself

1/700 - Waterline
1/350 - Full Hull
Let me know if you need plans for the E class.

I just found this message thread from last year. As it happens, I am looking for plans of the WW1 RN E Class submarine, can you help please?
Thanks
Mike

That was _very_ quick! It looks like there is enough there for the basis of a 1/700 scale model, and a good start for drawings for a 1/350 scale model.
I've also just ordered a copy of the 60's book "The Most Formidable Thing", which as I recall also has sketch drawings of an E-class. Somewhere in storage I have a notebook of scale drawings of various subjects I made as a young teenager in the late 60's, I know that the E-class was one of them, based on the sketch in that book.
I'm especially inspired just now to look at this class as a modelling subject, because I just spent 3 days in Istanbul on the way home from a long overseas trip. It was interesting to actually see the places that Nasmith got into with his E-11!
Thanks again
Mike

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Hello Mike,
Glad the information I passed was useful. The all report is most useful for those interested in RN subs from Holland to the early S-class.
If you have a keen interest on the E-class or the WWI RN submarines then I advise you the get the following books:
Royal Navy Submarines - 1901 to the Present - Maurice Cocker (very good photos and decent plans).
HM Submarines - P K Kemp - basically it's the service History (foreword by Nasmith himself)
British Submarines in the Great War - Edwyn Gray - The title says it all....History of HM Submarines in WWI...a must have.
A Century of Submarines - Peter Lawrence - Basically a photo album of submarine History in the 20th Century but mostly concentrated on HM Submarines.
HM Submarines in Camera - Paul Kemp - Another very decent photo album of HM Submarines.
In all these books you will find quite a bit of information, photos and records for the E-class. I have a keen interested in the E-class myself but have been dedicating myself lately to the X-1, M class and building at the moment one of the K-class steam submarines.
Best regards and good luck with the E-class model. You can also do a model either of Nasmith or Horton's boat.
Filipe

It's a Fleetline resin kit, Filipe.
They're an Australian outfit who do limited run kits of some unusual Australian items.

Thanks Brad. Going to mail them. Found their site but it seems the AE's are no longer in stock. Let's see what they say about my inquiry. Thanks again.brad wrote:It's a Fleetline resin kit, Filipe.

Re: Calling all WW1 and WW2 British Submarine fans
Hello all,
Although it isn't a WWII RN submarine CASF I find that we should generalize the topic a bit further (mods can do something about it?).
Currently almost done with Tim Clayton's book Sea Wolves - The extraordinary story of Britain's WW2 Submarines, and I am finding the book quite good. At least gives a different point of view of the normal testimonial and technical books over the last 70 years. Gives a more human insight and at the same time a neutral perspective from a proper historian....and it's a recent work (2011). Highly recommended. Any thoughts?
Best reading,
Filipe

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Maybe with the centenary someone will do a 1/700 or 1/350 WW1 British submarine? Hopefully...

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Not sure if it will actually take place. An E class would be a good one...specially at 350 scale. One day perhaps...HMS Zulu wrote:Maybe with the centenary someone will do a 1/700 or 1/350 WW1 British submarine? Hopefully...

Re: Calling all WW1 British Submarine fans
Hi all
Just discovered this thread and I read it with interest. I am considering building one of the British C class subs (either first or second type) at 1/48th scale. Of the books mentioned can anyone suggest the most useful for this proposed build? Plans and photos giving external hull detail is what I'm looking for.
Many thanks.......
