Well, the testors enamel black and brown paints on really nice without thinner. When it dries, it looks like the part is made of brown/black plastic and wasnt painted.


Yet the WHITE testors enamel paint is patchy and you must put on multiple coats with a brush to get it all evened out. Really annoying for IJN aircraft like the zero.

Yeah, white anything is pretty much impossible. 3 or 4 coats are not uncommon to make it look decent.

If I remember correctly they took the lead and benzene out of paint before you guys were even dirty thoughts. Enamels with benzene airbrushed & handbrushed better and cured faster. Paints with lead, especially white, yellow, red and orange actually covered in one coat.

Now you know why..........

That was me....oops...........

Benzene was one of the first products pulled from the consumer market for carcinogenic reasons back in the 1970's. It is one of the truly nasty carcinogens and while still used industrially it really should not be in consumer products (remember, some bright individual caused Husqvarna to put the warning label on their chainsaws "DO NOT attempt to stop moving chain with hands and/or genitals).....do you really want one of those bright lights handling something as nasty as benzene in or near your home?

I assume you have brush-painted onto bare plastic?

Not that I use the same brand, but next time, maybe you would be better either priming first or just using an airbrush.

Washing the plastic with a small amount of washing powder before you build can also make a difference, but make sure the water isn't too hot.

Now you have got to the stage of the dried paint looking greasy, what you could do is apply a wash coat of the same colour over it.

Brushing white it is difficult to get away from the problem, other than patience and a lot of thin coats.

Oh, okay, I get it now---The word "why" is VERY descriptive, you're right, so sorry, obviously it was just my foolish mistake! The topic being discussed is SO clearly indicated by the header line! I don't know why it wasn't clear as day to me. Why, I must have been referring to another post, entirely!

The next time I see a subject header with the single word, "Why?", I will IMMEDIATELY know right away, that it refers to paint color, adhesion, coverage, etc. Why would I think otherwise? Thanks for the reply, Ron....oops! well, time's short and I gotta go now, I have to mask and spray-why the lower hull of my destroyer model.

Best way to do white is to only use spray(cans). Tamiya ultra fine white primer and Tamiya flat spray white laquer is all you need. Two mist coats of primer, one finish coat of matte white. The laquer based paints cover well, dry extremely fast, and are nearly impervious to any chemicals, washes, or decal solovents. Every white bottle paint is too tempermental to waste your time with them, and often take weeks to fully cure. Don't waste your time. I can get black plastic perfectly white and dry in 20 minutes including all three coats with the spray. Being laquer it also is compatible with every other type of paint. I've had the two cans of spray for about 10 different model's radomes, landing gear, armament, etc. White spray enamel like Model Master's or regular Testors is NOT the same thing and has the same problems as bottle paints.

Well, to be honest, my original post here was just in fun, even IF I was the only one "laughing". I had just yesterday (I thought?), nailed-up a more serious post on this very issue (subject/header relevance); and here I am already, only hours afterward, stumbling across yet another one! Hence, my "friendly reminder" of today.

Evidently, nobody "got it", but my reply to Ron's contention that this thread was...

a) relevant, and

b) on-topic until I posted,

I'm not real keen on netiquette cops where no malicious intent was meant by any of the parties in a thread......but hammer trolls and anonymous snipers all you like since their intent is malicious by definition.
