Technically the 20mm Single guns were not difficult to build, but practically, due to the small parts, quite a challenge!

Pointos basic set
This thread seems to have gone suddenly dead, but hopefully I can get an answer to a question. I e-mailed this to Pontos but got no reply.
I recently acquired the Pontos basic set, but it does not contail the "correction" fret listed on Pontos site. It is 23001F2, version 2, which I assume contains all the updated instructions. Do I need this "correction" fret, or are these parts integrated into the other frets in this version 2 set?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Your set includes the updated intructions and the correction parts are indeed integrated in the other frets.
I almost finished my Bismarck and I enjoyed the Pontos sets very much. I used the complete basic and advanced set, some Eduard sets and scratch build details. Esspecialy the funnel can use a lot of additional details! I will try to post some photo's in the near future.
Best regards and enjoy your build!

Thanks for the reply. I did finally get a response from Pontos, and they said basically the same thing. Still, it's good to see it verified here.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Ok so I FINALLY have the Pontos set plus the upgrade set for my big Bismarck. I have built a couple of 1/350 scale ships with PE and have done lots of aircraft with PE but this is going to be my most ambitious project to date. After looking at all those sheets of brass I have a couple of basic "ship builder" type questions:
1. The masts are a bit bigger and heavier than previous experience so will CA glue work on these or should I use something else? Soldering might be best but I am not sure if I could do a clean enough job so I will probably stick with glue. I read that white glue, thinned with water works but I have never tried that. Any comments?
2. I noticed on a build posted online that the KA models set had two horns located under the upper decking but it appears Pontos only supplies one?
3. Has anyone tried using the decals for the large deck markings or should I paint?
4. I used to use Tamiya's metal primer spray for PE but can no longer find it. Any suggestions as to an alternate?
5. Does anyone know if there is a PE or other detail set for the extra turrent set provided with the kit?
I know these sound noob basic but I just wnat to make sure I am doing it right. No 'do overs' with this expensive of a kit for me. Next will be the high dollar 1/350 Yamato that Tamiya recently released. I have the Pontos set and a lot of other add ons for that one as well.

I build and build and build and someone keeps buying 'em... oh wait, that's me. Nevermind.

2. Bismarck had only 1 Horn KA is wrong here
3. If you are using the wooden Deck paint would be the first choise, Decals are hard to do on Wood.
4. I am not usaly prime PE parts, for me it works without primer.
5. use the PE from the KIt for the extra Turrent.

I've built a lot of models on and off over the years, but don't have a lot of experience with PE. So the Bismarck will sit awhile as I work on some simpler projects.Dennis The Modeler wrote:Ok so I FINALLY have the Pontos set plus the upgrade set for my big Bismarck. #3, I too would paint. Decals would cover up the detail of the wood deck and wouldn't look right. Just my opinion. Gator's Grip Glue makes an excellent (if a bit pricey) mask for the Bismarck. Includes the aircraft recognition symbols on bow and stern, and the black and white camo stripes on the sides.

#4, I've used Mr. Hobby Mr. Surfacer 1000 in the rattle can, it sticks quite well to both PE and plastic. Not sure that it's necessary though.
#5, the bonus turret kit comes with a small set of PE, mostly railings and ladders. That's all I plan to use.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Thanks for all the advice guys. I will get the Gator glue and try it on my USS Olympia I am finishing up before goofing up Bismarck. I had heard about Gator Glue on another website too but wanted to wait and see if anyone would mention it here.
I was hoping for some interior detailing for the turret. I plan to do mine as a cutaway in a 'deck' type of box so the interior will be highly visable.
BTW, if anyone is interested I posted pics of my Encore Olympia build in the "protected cruisers" section. My first experiment with water and my first ship model in 30 years...
Thanks again,
Dennis

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Your welcome. As for the Gator's Grip, I wasn't really talking about the glue itself, but about the paint mask he makes for the Bismarck. I have a bottle of the glue but haven't tried it yet, so I can't speak to how well it works on what types of materials. But I do read good things about it.Dennis The Modeler wrote:Thanks for all the advice guys. I will get the Gator glue and try it on my USS Olympia I am finishing up before goofing up Bismarck. Paul,
I used the wooden deck and air brushed the marking. I think it came out well.

Mr Kim,
I need help. I don't know how to connect the capstan parts 822 to 830 - I can't find the shaft to connect these part together.
Please advise.

Dawie.

A few photo's to show my progress with the advanced add on set:
Painted. The brass screws looks very nice! Starting with decking detail Thought it wise to protect all these small and delicate parts! Happy modeling to all!

You have to supply your own plastic rods. Just buy some rod and then wrap your choice of material to simulate hoses, wires, etc.
Good luck.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Tobori,
Thanks for the suggestion and response
- would be practical and easy to source.
After a good nights rest I came up with the following idea: I glued the existing capstans together and is planning to use the existing capstans shafts after cutting off the reals and stands. I see the PE reals and stands have a 0.5mm hole. I will then drill a 0.5mm hole through the capstan shaft, place a 0.5mm wire through, glue every thing together and trim the wire to suite. Will post some pictures with this process.
You are also rights about the wiring required to simulate the hoses - I am planning to use network cable wiring for this purpose and paint it black on completion.
Regards,
Dawie.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
I wouldn't even worry about the 0.5mm hole - just glue the PE parts directly to the ends of the plastic reel.
De quoi s'agit-il?

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Tobori,
The sequence pictures for the hose reel assembly as mentioned:
1. Existing parts 2. Reels removed - only shafts to be drilled (0.5mm holes) 3. Wiring added for hoses. This was done before assembly as you would certainly demolish the assembly if you do it afterwards! 4. Drilled and 0.4mm wires added. I found the wires essential to align the side of the hose reel once fitted with the hose reel legs that has to be added afterwards. Trimmed after gluing. It was very easy to do it this way. 5. The completed products - all three sizes came out just fine.

Good Job Dawie,
Basically there are 0.55mm holes on the both wall supporters of reel for 0.5mm axis.
Thank you
Keumho Kim

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 Bismarck Detail Up Set
Mr Kim,
I refer to the Detail Up Set Advanced kit, PE sheet #5 parts 1497 and 1498. These parts seems to be part of the rigging for Bismarck. Do you have any detail available for the rigging and how to use these parts?
I can't find any accurate info on how to do the rigging. Thought that since you included these parts, there must be a plan or sketch on how to use them.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
