Calling all USS New York BB-34 and USS Texas BB-35 fans

I'm doing some research for a possible future project (1/700 USS New York) and had some questions regarding her Ms31 scheme. Looking at the trumpeter kit online the included painting diagram shows the camouflage pattern mirrored on both sides and using what looks like 5L, 5O, and black. Looking at navsource the camouflage pattern drawn up by the Navy is different side to side and using 5H, 5O, and 5N.

I'm guessing trumpeter is wrong and I should go with what the Navy designed? Anyone know where trumpeter got their info from? In my short search so far I haven't found any pictures of the port side of the ship, is this why trumpeter decided to mirror the pattern? Looking at the ship camouflage website it specifies 5H, 5O, and black for the colors. Which colors did New York ultimately use? I'm leaning towards the 5H, 5O,and 5N specified on the navy's drawing.

I have David Doyle's book on BB-34 New York, and if you look closely at the photos, the waterline is much darker than the darkest color in the pattern so I think 5-N is correct per the USN camo drawing. Some info here at the USN Dazzle site:

Unless they deviated from the design, it really was (mostly) mirrored.

Always cross-check Trumpeter (most manufacturers, really) with more authoritative sources when it comes to ship colors and schemes. Some of the specialist resin companies apply that level of effort to get it right, but I have yet to see a major injection manufacturer indicate a paint choice that seemed off but turned out to be correct (again, as far as ship kits are concerned; and this is only in my own experience)
And, of course, don't forget the tendency - sometimes even pressure - to specify choices from certain paint lines, and in colors that are readily available in said lines. Both from cross-marketing agreements and from the simple desire of the ordinary modeler to just buy a bottle and go with it.
(How many times do we hear the "What is the closest out-of-the-bottle match for XXX in Tamiya? question! Although, Tamiya's Light Gray is closer to 5H than it is to 5L...)
Not that that justifies mixing up the Navy Blue with Black, mind you...

Thanks for the confirmation guys. When I looked at the pictures the first thing I said was "that's too light to be a black color". I always forget Texas also wore the dazzle scheme too, although for a much, much shorter time period.

I just remembered that I probably have the New York and Texas books on the shelf, guess I should actually look at my references I have on hand

Battleship Texas

Howdy y�all, we are back with our weekly report of the work going on around the Battleship Texas.
As we�ve said before, the foam removal continues on the starboard side blister tanks. Things are starting to move like clockwork now as they begin to move past midship. Along with the foam removal of the blisters, the foam removal around the stern continues as well. The large trimming tank has been mostly cleared and the last bit of foam seems to be coming out now. The smaller tanks around the stern have also had the removal process started and some hot work is starting to begin in the spaces which have been cleared.

The blister removal that has been ongoing as the blister tanks are cleared of foam has been moving forward at a quick pace. So far, the blister on the starboard side has almost made it to around frame 60. The ship's hull which is slowly being revealed is looking rusty but overall, good.
More parts of the hull are being cut open to expose the inner bottom tanks with work starting on the A section this week. Once they are all done, the process of cleaning them out and coating them to protect the steel can begin.

This week was particularly notable as the first 5� gun from the ship�s secondary battery was removed on Friday. The gun was lifted out of the mount and pulled from the gun port over the course of many hours. Once all the guns are out, we can start the process of moving them to our offsite warehouse to work on them alongside the ship�s AA guns.

We had to turn a 5� gun this morning as it was in the way of the crane but it was well worth it! The second torpedo blister module is currently being fitted to the hull.

Need some help checking Trumpeter 1/350 scale kits. If you have a Trumpeter 1/350 scale Texas or New York kit and have access to a digital caliper, please measure the diameter of the slot for the 14" turrets and let me know what you find (millimeters preferred).

Any help is hugely appreciated!

My cheap Harbor Freight calipers show 7.50mm. Another set varied from 7.35mm to 7.7mm. Maybe this is of some help.
