Can anyone help with identifying the antenna off the starboard side of the stack on this picture of the Shangri-la.

It is located above the platform housing the 36" spotlight and single 20mm gun and below the SK-2 radar dish. I don't see it mentioned in any of the reference books I have (Raven's Essex-class, Friedman's Aircraft Carriers, or AOTS Intrepid).

The color for lift wells was white or some type of gray? Hancock is in question. If possible, could you identify which lift is which-there are couple of photos on this thread, but 50some pages is a lot to search from...

"under the hangar deck" wells white, under the flight deck to the hangar deck a dark color, either Navy or Deck blue.

were any safety lines present around lift wells?

Also,were safety lines(or railing) always present on hangar doors?

also, this is fore lift well, the shot is taken from the hangar deck level?

Excuse my ignorance, but if it is, than the fore lift did not extend deep under the hangar deck,and the white segment is actually the bottom?

American carriers only had one level hangar decks (opposed to british and japanese multiple level). The elevators lowered to flush with the hangar deck. That well you see is deep enough to allow for this and so crews can get under the elevator and preform maintanence on the underside.

Looks to be about 2 meters to me, judging by the door on the left bulkhead in the center. I'd say about the height of a normal deck. There were vast storage spaces throughout the ship, but there was only one level of aircraft hangar. Ammunitions and ordnance were brought up by smaller elevators.

Looks nice Steve! Those pullies you have up front are correct for the post war Essexes though... not during the war. I really hate to say anything though.. it looks so nice!

Hello,

I'm pretty new to this site, and I'm stunned by all of the great models.

My dad was a plankowner on the Yorktown CV-10, and I've been building the Trumperter 1/350 model for a few months now.

Can anyone tell me where the Air Intelligence Office was located? That's where my dad worked, typing up reports after battles. He did mention that it was right under the flight deck, but that's all.

I looked in "Essex Class Carriers" by Alan Raven and the "Anatomy of the Ship: Intrepid" book by John Roberts, and while each ship varied, both show the air intelligence office in the same area. Under the flight deck, midway between the centerline and port deck edge, centered about where the middle of the deck-edge elevator is.

Do you have "The Fighting Lady: The New Yorktown in the Pacific War" by Clark Reynolds? If not, it would be a good book for you to pick up... it might mention your Dad or some of his friends aboard.
