As mentioned there are many small fittings needing to be made .
This set goes under the Nato code of Tee Plinth .
Both Kiev and Minsk are fitted with �Tee Plinth� in effect a television sensor array .
This is made up from 1.5mm styrene and aluminium tube.

The assembled Tee Plinth sensor.

Tee Plinth is mounted on the lower platform just above the deck .

Next the construction and soldering of the �lattice spars�

Very cool, it really looks like a Kiev now! Hard to find any errors, if you left it like this, I doubt anyone would find out wether you forgot something or not!

Great solution for the tee plinth! Museum quality for sure!

Thank you all for your kind comments . Just for the record "Tee Plinth" was replaced by "Tin Man" on the Novorossiysk. Unlike Tee Plinth, Tin man incorporated a lazar range finding device. During the course of research on Kiev I became aware just how different each of the Kiev's were and that's not including Gorshkov. The differences were minor but many.

The next stage involved soldering up the lattice spar frame work
that extends from either side of the stack . This was cut to size
from 0.31mm and 0.4mm brass wire

The main spar was soldered first

Each main section prepared

Soldering up the upper horizontal �V� frame which supports two vertical aerials

Aerials and spacer bar in place.

The two separate section ready to be fitted to the stack.

One of two separate extended aerials that also fit to the rear and each side of the stack.

All the soldering is done by using a variable heat electronic soldering iron with a fine bit.

Supports for power cable feeds leading to the lattice frame .

Supports being fitted to the side of the stack.

One of the two lattice spars located into the stack.

The �V� frame temporarily in position atop of the lattice spar.

One of two aerials also set into place.

The two lattice spars in place. These have yet to be trimmed
to size within the stack . As these two spars are rather fragile
they will be removed , cleaned up and put in the fittings box
ready to be fitted at a later date as other work needs to be
undertaken in the same area.

For the moment all the arrays will be placed in position to
give a overall view of the progress thus far and in many ways
it shows how much progress has been made but on the flip side it shows
how much needs to be done just concentrating on the island superstructure.
More cable work, more aerials , rails, after missile launcher and gun
mounting and that�s before it sees a coat of paint.

I think it was some Chinese sage that stated , �It�s not so much
arriving at the destination but the journey that counts�? or words
to that effect. Some journey ?

Next time the after deck housing for the SA-N-3
and the 76.2mm twin . Dave Wooley

Thanks guys . Although fitted with a single large island superstructure the Soviets seemed to pack so much into this structure. Yet I still remain puzzled as to why it had to be so large?

It had to be large because of Soviet technology. Remember when the pilot defected to Japan with a Mig-25 and they found this "state of the art" fighter was loaded with '60s electronics? Same idea here. That stack probably vents heat from all of the vacuum tubes inside...
