Calling all Spruance-class DD fans

Does anyone have a drawing of the DDH design that was proposed for DD-997 Hayler? I think it was planned to complete her to this design, but for cost reasons she was completed to the standard Spruance design instead.

they are drawing 19 items G1, G2. G3,G4.G5 G6 and G7 also M1,M2,M3

Is there somebody who has them available and can sent them to me?? Ist all of the rocket forward section

I go by her every time i go to see my grandmother - a friend of mine was on the last cruise.

As far as DDH configuration, the only pic/drawing I have seen is in one of my books:
The Hybrid Warship, the amalgamation of big guns and aircraft
RD Layman and Stephen McLaughlin
Naval Institute Press, 1991

Drawing is on page 191 (by A D Baker) and shows the helo deck extended out to just forward of mount 52 (covering the traditional Mk 29 Location), an expanded hangar which goes about as far aft as the shutters for the mk 32 TT, and the Mk 29 moved to the top of this hangar.
The deck follows the countours established by the existing structure (probably to maintian firing arc for mount 52), so it does not have the same shape aft as the traditional deck.
(Note - the drawing has SPS-40 as common to the rest of the Spruance class, not the SPS-49 actually fitted)

Of course it would have looked much better with the Mk 71 MCLWG....but then, what wouldn't?

Electronic Greyhounds: The Spruance-Class Destroyers has a port-side sketch of the DDH design from the US Naval Institute's files. The source and date are not recorded for the original but I believe it is a close-to-final sketch for the intended design. It corresponds with Dave Baker's drawing in The Hybrid Warship; Dave may have based his drawing on the identical sketch.

The WSC-3 antennas (this type) are located on the mainmast yardarms.

Both the sketch and the drawing show two features that I think would differ on an actual ship:
1. An noted, the AN/SPS-40. USN production had ended so it is likely that a "DDH 997" would mount AN/SPS-49, as aboard the actual USS Hayler.
2. The Ticonderoga-type IR reduction funnels. Congress authorized the DDH ship on the basis that she would cost no more than a standard Spru-can. If the standard Spru-can exhausts were cheaper the the IR suppression type, that could explain why actual Hayler featured standard Spru-can exhausts. But there are conceivable alternative explanations for retaining the Spru-can exhausts, such as a potential need to make special measurements for the unique funnel configuration.

Thanks for the info on the Spruance DDH configuration. Would either of you be able to scan a copy of the drawings you referred to and send it to me? I looked up both of those books and both are well over $100 on abebooks which is pretty steep for a reference for a 1/700 kitbash...

We used to run around with a pack of Spru cans. Our Battle Group was larger than normal, 2 FFG's, 3 DD's, 1 DDG, 2 CG's, 1 CV, 2 SSN's, and 1 suppy ship.

The Spruance class ships were nice platforms. The Kidd's, which I was on one, were a nice step above the 963 class.

One afternoon we came across the Radford and had a drag race. They won, but I still say she jumped the flare.

Ok, Is there any place to obtain a set of plans for a Spruance Class destroyer other
than Taubman ? The cost is very high for what you get and $17 for one sheet of paper
11 x 14 " for hull lines is a bit much. Please let me know if there is any other source
for these. I wish to start a scratch 1/96th model soon and just waited 5 weeks to receive
what I would call dissapointing plan drawings . two sheets for $42. and it's not even a good start for what is needed ! Help ! Thanks. Kerry

So, if I'm reading this correctly, the Spruance DDH is essentially the helo pad is extended to over the mk29 mounting, yet is the same length overall, as the hangar is fully extended aft to house the additional helicopters. Mk29 mounting is moved up, to sit over the hangar deck. My question is... does the helipad remain at its current height, or is it dropped down a deck?

Tempting to do the 8"/55 mounting I have designed for my Super Ticon on the Spruance DDH, but knowing the guys over at SB, I find myself wondering how researched the Haylers are - the Second one looks about right, to a point. I'll have to ask over there.

This book is very good for learning these classes history up to 1995. A must for any Sprucan fan, it lacks detail photos that an modeller needs, but for me it was worth all its money. It has some interesting drawings of proposed designs, one is an 12.000t with VTOL pad at stern, large hangar and an VSTOL fligth deck at front.

I dont know if they ever carried Standard missiles operational but it was planned to use them as missile platforms and let an Aegis platform control them in flight.

Once i was onboard USS Caron as she visited Oslo in the 90`s i remember asking an WSO if they could replenish the VLS underway, he looked a bit strange at me and said; No.

A lot of the internal stuff, I'm not exactly worried about, or a lot of the details, as truth be told, I'm not much of a Standard Spruance fan per se, I have an insatiable love for altering ship designs, and as such the Spruance DDH came to be of interest to me, leading up to the question you see above. Really, all I would love to have is a side profile shot so I could see the elevation differences, ostensibly one to compare beside a standard Spruance so I could see the height differences to adapt the hull properly to fit the concept.
