Gun Cruiser Group Build

This group build will run from
11/27/10 - 3/6/11

All materials are allowed including but not limited to: plastic, resin, cardboard, PE, etc.
What-if's are allowed but not encouraged. One entry per builder please. Any scale is fine as well.

The subject of this build is "GUN CRUISERS"
I can understand that this subject might lead to some confusion. Battlecruisers like Hood, Renown, Scharnhorst, Kongos, are not applicable. I'm even questioning allowing the CB's: Alaska & Guam's eligibility due to their difficult classifications. Cruisers in this build must have had guns as their main armament, not missiles, however, cruisers modified after WWII such as Little Rock are applicable. If you are confused if your kit is eligible for this build, PM me. I always respond as quickly as possible!

There will of course be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place builders.

The US Navy classified them as "Large" Cruisers, so they technically should count.

I know but the problem is they were bigger, faster, and more powerful than Scharnhorst class battlecruisers. I'll leave this one up to be determined by the masses

I'm in as well with a 1/350 kit, although I can't decide whether to build plastic (Tamiya Mogami, Aoshima Nachi) or tackle my first big resin build (YMW Helena, Atlanta, Houston).

Hmm........ any chance of getting a waiver on the unstarted rule? I need some motivation. I've got a 1/700 Aoshima Maya that's less than 10% along and been dormant for about 3 years.

Ah, well, the Atlanta is already somewhat coming along and I don't want to cheat. Therefore I will scratchbuild the USS Charleston C-2, gun cruiser of 1887.

Let's see: get plans from the French Archives: 2 minutes
Figure out the sandwich construction, this being ridicilously easy, since there are no hull lines to speak of. Figure out correct scale, punch in printing dimensions: 2 minutes
Print out drawings, glue to 1mm evergreen: 4 minutes.
Check facebook status, mail: 2 minutes.
Cut out waterline plate, main deck: 2 minutes.
Place four strips of 2x2mm evergreen on the bottom half. Glue on top half (main deck). 2.5 minutes.
Knead the Magic Sculp: 4 minutes. Misjudge the quantity: check.
Fill the hull sandwich with magic sculp: 4 minutes.
Let it harden: one night.
Pour a glass of scotch: timeless.

I'd join in with my 1/350 Cerberus (only a little thing, but a cruiser in her day) but I seriously doubt that 3 months is long enough for me - particularly as it's summer here in Australia - and this is only a hobby for me that I do when I have nothing else to do.

I'm thinking of jumping in and designing a paper model-I need some inspiration for my next kit. Have to decide what it'll be though, candidates are:

USS Astoria (CA-34)
USS Miami (CL-89)
USS Chicago (CG-11-hey, you said it counts! )

I'm leaning heavily towards Chicago, I could do her either in paper (my own design) or plastic (Monogram kit) depending on what suits me come the 27th. Thoughts, anyone?

I'm in as well gents with a 1944 version of USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37) from the 1/700 Trumpy kit of CA-38. I'll start construction probably around the first of the year. I have a few others I need to get done for Christmas first.
