Hi Norberto Thank you my friend for your kind offer . The delay on this project is one on priorities. I am presently working on a 1:72 HMS Daring , which will in due course become a serialized built log for my column in the "Model Boats" magazine . It's not a scratch build therefore I really can't post it up on this board .The real description would be semi Kit as much of the model is provided for. This should be completed in the near future then I'll be free to concentrate on Steregushchiy .BUT just a glimpse of this large and imposing model under construction ,although the appearance and design does not appeal to every one :heh: :wave_1: .

Thanks Norberto . By the way the black strips along the hull are not boot topping but are there to assess ballast and trim . I like to fit out all the engineering , motors, servos, R/C and power supply then conduct all the trials to test ballast -trim and of course power and steering trials. If all goes well I can move on to building the model.
Here is the Daring hull undergoing those trials . I tend to stay with the same method regardless of hull .

Hi Mick good to hear from you .I will be looking forward to an up date on the "Admiral". At the moment there is no build thread on MW only that which is about to start in the Model Boats magazine July or August issue. Even though the Daring is a semi Kit it is an interesting build .The real ship "grows" on you .but It's not love at first sight

I don't want to hijack my own thread and as I said this is not a scratch built model but it's not as simple to build as it first appeared . :cool_1:

Hi Lazarus what a good description . There will be 6 Daring class with HMS Duncan , the last due to enter service in 2013. Stealth warships even those as big as the Darings are not every one's cup of tea. I am enjoying the build but will be keen to return to the Steregushchiy which will be all scratch built. One more picture of the Daring showing the internal layout . Because of the design of the ship and the configuration of the moulding a little latteral thought was needed. :heh:
With the engineering , power trials and ballasting completed , that's one major job out of the way.

Hi Dave, Nice work on HMS Daring. That's a good tip about the trim lines, and your pictures show that you've the ballast nicely distributed. :thumbs_up_1:

I've been waiting patiently for Steregushchiy to be laid down, as have many others. You'll notice that the build now spans 5 pages and work hasn't even started! Something of a record, and a measure of anticipation on the site. :wave_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Hi , I have to say the thing about Dave, he always comes up with unusual subjects, and exicutes them with precision, a very talented and accomplished modeler, always willing to share his knowledge. :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo: :thumbs_up_1: :wave_1:

You keep reffering to Semi kit?
Where to get that semi kit? and at what price?

Mitch :)

Hello Dave!

I've been enjoying catching up with this thread, really fabulous work, I have to say.

On the subject of the HMS Daring, I always thought that foretop looked like a Dalek from Dr. Who. Is it just me? :cool_2:

I'm getting the impression from yours and Ron's thread that ballast is a real issue with RC models, something that must be carefully planned... It must make it a real challenge to create a model that is both accurate and stable. Do you have any horror stories about improperly ballasted models, yours or others? Inquiring minds want to know...

At any rate, great work, very much enjoying the thread.

Hi Roel Great to hear from you .I trust you are well. Yep you are right Steregushchiy is delayed but that is par for the course. Remember when you started the Kiev thread it was a full 12 months before there was enough of a head of steam to get the project rolling and of course other odd distractions like getting a book published. However history is sort of repeating it self, this times its contractual related projects for the Magazine. I am also waiting on a GA drawing of the Steregushchiy .Once that arrives the drawings portfolio will be complete.

Hi Callan good to hear from you. Yes ballast on any size of working model can be quite problematic if not critical. If done badly then the model ship will either not behave as intended or look out of place in its natural environment. Done properly then the rewards are a good sailing model that mirrors the real ship. As for Horror stories. Well where do I begin. To answer your question I have not lost a ship yet but I have come mighty close: heh: Seriously setting up a working model regardless of propulsion runs in parallel to the build of a model. Getting it right on a whole raft of installation tasks and it will benefit the model through out its period of use as a working model. For those interested in this very subject it is explained in detail in Warships and Warship Modeling and this is not a plug for the book but it is a subject that is as important to the build as the built it self. . As the old saying goes anything can be made to float but not anything can be made to sail. If any one does have any questions on this subject then please ask and if I can help I will do my best .

Hi Guys, I will plug Dave,s book, one to have on the shelf,

As for balasting, the lighter you build your model the more balast you can have below the water line, so its all down to planing and materials you use. :heh: :heh: :thumbs_up_1:
Simple but effective.

Daring looks like a result of Kirov had mated with Independence. Independence with tower and "domes".
