Hello Gentlemen,
I need your help, please. I�m currently scaling SCB125 plans of Oriskany and Intrepid to 1:350 in Corel Draw. I used Ravens plans from his book "Essex Class Carriers". I have put the both plans one below the other and scaled them to the desired length in 1:350. My problem is that I have found several different length data for the class in books from Terzibaschitsch, Classic Warship (Ticonderoga) and Friedman. Terzibaschitsch writes that Intrepid is 272.8m (895feet) long and Oriskany 271.4m (890.4 feet). Classic Warship states that Ticonderoga (identical to Intrepid - both SCB27C) is 274.1m (899.3 feet) long. I guess that this is the length over all, isn�t it? I read on the Internet that Oriskany is 910 feet long. When I scale the Raven plans with these data, I noticed that Oriskanys bridge is about 7 feet less higher than Intrepids bridge. Is that right, since I read here that the SCB125 bridges were identical on all rebuild ships? What are the right lengths over all for Oriskany and Intrepid? The Internet doesn�t seem to help much since I found even more confusing lengths.

The biggest problem is that length is not static over time. The most often quoted length of a long-hull Essex in WW-II configuration is 888'. The SCB-27 series mods lengthened this slightly since the 3" gun tubs extended beyond the hull slightly at the bow, and the stern tub extension was also modified for the 3" guns. When SCB-125 was applied, the length changed again as the bow was extended forward. SCB-27C ships, with the steam catapults were even longer after SCB-125 because of the bridle-arrester "horns" extending from the bow. Tracy White probably has the precise numbers. Another concern is the beam. SCB-27A ships were generally widened to 101' on the waterline. However, Oriskany, being the prototype for the mod, was 106' wide. The SCB-27C ships were widened to 103' due to the extra top-wieght of the steam cats. The beam issue is why Oriskany was the only SCB-27A unit later upgraded to SCB-27C standards.

Ok, here is a question for more learned minds than my own! I am familiar with modern CVN's and WW2 CV's, but the interm is a mystery to me!

What are my options for a 1/350 Essex kit I have that is damaged beyond repair in a WW2 fit?

If I am going to salvage/convert this thing, I have a few personal requirements (or wants I guess) that I am unsure weather are possible or not... Specific ship of the class is unimportant to me, but I would prefer a ship that saw action in vietnam if possible.

My requirements:
MUST have skyraiders on deck (I just love those workhorses)
Must be a grey scheme ariwing, no dark blue Korean War era
I would LIKE to have Phantoms
Skyhawks

I would like to not have to do MAJOR modifications to the hull, ie, if there was a rounded "bulge" done to the port side unsder the angled deck area like on more modern CV/CVN's

I'm not scared of the scratchbuilding by any means, I just have enough huge major conversions, I would like this to be a little more on the relaxing side if that is possible.

Any ideas fellas?

If my wants are not possible, I have some ideas for making her into a what-if predecessor to the LPH's/LHA/s with helos and a Marine detachment of Skyraiders for close ground support.

Hey Ryan, well i'm turn my Hornet into the Shangri-la CV-38 Nam version. Hans Pernal took a 1/350 Trumpy Hancock and made a Bom Hom Richard. Hong Seungmin took his 1/700 cv-13 and made a cvs-12 out of it. taking notes from him and start on that on July. have five sky raiders on deck so far,want ten. by the way the SuperEssexs carry no F-4's, F-8's yes.

Hi Guys, Ive been a modeler most of my adult life, but just recently caught the ship bug. Iam currently building my first ship model since I was a kid, the Dragon 1/350 USS Buchanan. Iam making good progress and am enjoying the learning process from armor and aircraft. Now to my question. I want to build the USS Intrepid circa the early 60's in 1/350 scale. Is there a kit that is a good starting point, preferably with an angled deck already included? My dad served aboard her '62-'65, and I would like to surprise him with a nice build of it. It doesnt have to be exact as I doubt he remembers every detail, but something close. Thanks in advance foe any help and replies.

Welcome to the MWS board. Unfortunately, the kit you are hoping to find has been the unfulfilled dream of a number of members of this and other forums. But nobody has produced one yet. The closest thing is a 1/540(ish) kit that doesn't match some of Intrepid's unique features. Even in 1/700, the closest you will get is a couple of resin kits that would need to be altered into Intrepid - if you could find one to begin with.
