That is odd. They are E-2Cs. E-2D is still doing development stuff in Pax and Norfolk. Nice pics! :thumbs_up_1:

Just given you a bit of a ration! :heh: There is no way that you could tell the difference that far away.

It is a pretty neat pic though. I don't think I have ever seen them parked like that either.

Can I get some ideas a to what color the flight deck should be. I tried flat black and realized its way to dark. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For all of my CVN flight decks, the best I have found is Tamiya Acrylic "German Gery". This is right on for these decks, and even has a rougher "texture" than other brands, giving a non-skid appearence.

German gray sounds like a good choice, I will give it a try.

Next question, can anyone confirm if the big mural was still present on the blast doors in 2001?

Thanks,
Scott

This set from Starfighter Decals will get your deck marked.
http://www.starfighter-decals.com/3508- ... p-mar.html

The foul lines and landing area are good for all years and would also work for everything else if you are doing the back fit to 1962-1969.

This set from GMM will et you the more modern markings less the foul lines and landing area.

Both sets together should get you where you want to go for a 1984-present.

Hi to all. I've purchased the Tamiya 1/35 Big E some days ago, and now I'm in the phase of gathering info, photos, books, plans and so on.

I'm saving all the photos I can get from the internet, downloaded some scans and plans too.

I'll be doing the big E after the '82 refit, with the CVW 11. I'm planning to do a long, extensive and detailed work, so all the help is needed.

Throw at me all kind of useful links, photos and books you've got.

Now the actual questions:

1. Anybody knows what's the diameter of the tie downs on the deck? I'm doing some Corel drawing and will do the Photo Etched tie downs, I've done the tie down in 1mm (would be 35cm in real life), is that correct?

2. I heard that Tamiya put the tie downs too far apart one from each other? correct? I read that the tie downs should be apart 1,8 m fore and aft and 2,3 m port to starboard, is this correct? Anyone know the approximate number of tie downs on the deck and hangar?

3. Tie downs where really painted white or? I've seen black, gray and white tie down pads on the referent pictures, so I don't know what correct.

4. I'll be scratch building the hangar like many modelers do, I would need some schemes for the lightning.

5. Does anyone produce the hangar decals, or I have to do it myself?

Thanks for the help!!

Here's the monster with my Missouri and Buke...

I can offer answers to a few of those...

First, holy cow, what an undertaking to remove and replace/relocate all the tie-down's, you are in for a maddening ride!

For your timeframe the tie downs should be white IIRC, but they were very quickly grimed up and did not look white for very long. My technique is to color each tie down with a good quality silver colored pencil. After you weather and flat coat the flight deck, the effect is very convincing.

I have lit a few CVN's and have finally found a technique I am very happy with. I used LED light strips on my current Bush build, and they are perfect. Alternatively, if you close the port side elevator door, you can achieve a very nice lighting effect much cheaper and easier by installing LED bulbs off a string in the hidden areas along the starboard walls.

You can contacy forum member Patrice (royaux) for the Enterprise's hangar decals, in a word, these are awesome, and the mural artwork is really cool. He will send you the file for a small fee, and you will need to print them yourself.

For a project this intense, do yourself a huge favor, and contact Ray Bean at stillmotion (sponsor on the main page) and buy his photo CD corresponding to your timeframe. His CD's are awesome, reasonably priced, and have proved to be an invaluable reference for my build of the Bush.

As near as I can tell the tie downs are 6 inches in diameter and are on a grid approximately 96in x 96in apart with an interstitial tie down in the center of each grid box (i.e. offset 48in x 48in from the corner). That pattern repeats almost the complete surface of the deck. However near the edges, the equipment, and the elevators it gets cockeyed in order to fit tie downs in.

More along the lines of this:
Tie Downs.jpg
There is one row down the centerline of the ship set back 12 inches from where the front end starts to curve down. That's where the gray starts and the black deck material stops. The other tie-downs are spaced off this row down the centerline.

No I wasn't able to map the entire thing. I only did this section as an example to Dragon.

so that's a photo of the dragon 1/700 kit? maybe the tie downs there are positioned correctly so I could use that as a reference?
