Calling all Essex-class (Cold War configuration) fans

USS ESSEX just to get things started. i'm just a fan NO expert on these ships. if any like to chime in with what you got, please do.

Hey Red, don't know if you've seen this site before but its a treasure trove of HIGH-RES carrier and aircraft photos. Plenty of nice SCB shots! I've found that searching for the ships designation gets the best results, IE CVS-9, CVA-14, etc... instead of the proper name.

Only issue is that you have to select "copy image" when you right click on the high-res version and then "paste" it into Paint, Photoshop, etc... If you try to save the JPEG directly, it says its a JPEG but it will wind up saving as a PHP script instead for some stupid reason. At least that's what Firefox does with the site. No clue about any other browsers.

I have jut started an SCB-125 convert myself. I've concluded that the kit manufactures will not release one until all of us that wanted one have spent the time to virtually scratch-build it Hong Seungmin Hornet build s/b an inspiration to us all, and from what I can see you have a pretty good handle on scratch'n yourself

Here are a couple pictures of SHANGRI-LA (CVA-38). Shang, Lex, and Bonnie Dick were converted from the same plans and they had a significantly different bow than the other ships.

Good idea to split the Essex class up, but why only angled deck 125's? How about Modernized Essexes and Original Essexes. The former to include 27A, 27C and 125 ships. The latter to remain for WW2 condition ships. OR - go the opposite route and have separate threads for Original Essexes, 27A, 27C and 125 ships.

Good idea. Simplified it down to Cold War versus WWII.

Okay, split complete. There are a few 1946ish posts in the old thread, but I'm leaving them there mainly because they follow a discussion relating to wartime items or are being used to illustrate things that pertain to wartime fit.

It is all about end speed and you have a certain length of catapult to work with. A phantom required more speed to get airborne so it requires more force to throw the Phantom than the Whale even if the Whale weighed more. A Whale needed a lower speed to get airborne. When an airplane pulls up to a cat, the shooter sets the force of the shot based on the weight of the plane and the required end speed to get it airborne. I think that the Essex Class could not shoot a Phantom easily because of the stress on the Cat and the ship had a hard time gettting the required wind( couldn't make the knots) over the deck to reach the end speed.

So that is it in a nutshell.

What was really neat in the old days was that the various class of carriers had different lengths of cats. A shot on Midway would put you in the seat harder than one on Nimitz because the Cat was shorter on Midway. It is the same thing on the carrier depending on which Cat you launch off of. Cat 4 was a better ride than the other three cats on Nimitz because it was shorter.

so NO F-4's were on board the Essex Class. O.K. Guys
