Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi all-
Just back from the show in Orlando where I picked up the Academy Warspite and the matching Pontos detail set. I'm looking for some color info. I want to try to replicate the ship in the D-day scheme and am looking for some color equivalents of the acrylic variety. I've checked the suggested numbers from the Vallejo cross-reference chart and they look WAY off to me. Any assistance, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Try Harry at Battlefleet models, he has the new testors paints including British colors that aren't enamel. It is my understanding that warspite wore AP 507C & AP 507B. 507 B was a 50/50 mix of 507 A & 507 C . If i'm wrong JS will correct me. hth

A bump for my question, as it will apply to frank....

Its my first post here.. I am normally a Aircraft guy but have been getting the itch to build a couple of ships! So I have picked up 1/350 Hasegawa Nagato, Hobby Boss Arizona and the Academy Warspite!
Having no info at all on anything that floats without wings... Hopefully you guys can help or point me in the right direction...
I would like to model my Warspite off this photo of her off the coast of Normandy during the invasion...
Are there any major exterior changes/mods that I need to take into mind, by using the 1942 boxing from Academy and building her to a June 1944 spec?

Thanks JCRAY. I totally forgot about the Model Master paints. I emailed Harry at Battlefleet to see if they are in stock.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Well, it looks like a no-go on the Testors paints. The 507-c is enamel only and I have to stick to the acrylic. I have looked at the vallejo charts and the 507-c looks spot on when matched to the White Ensign paint that I have. The question I have is the 507-b. The vallejo match looks REALLY blue to me when Warspite is traditionally done in more of a dark gray. Can anyone speak to the accuracy of the vallejo match for 507-b? Was it really more blue than gray? Does anyone have any paint formulas they would like to share? Got some info by pm on some Tamiya possibilities but without exact ratios I'm a bit timid to try.

Have a go at mixing your colours till you are happy with it - the final shade will vary depending on where the model is situated - in daylight or under artificial light , incandecent or flourecent ( spelling
)

Are you sure they don't have 507C in acrylics? Testor's site shows it as an item (though not 507B): http://www.testors.com/products/561970

Hi Timmy-
I was wrong, it's the 507-B that's holding me up. According to Harry at Battlefleet (I spoke with him by phone) it's only available in enamel. The Testor's site does list the 507-A and 507-C in acrylic though. If I remember correctly though 507-B was a 50/50 mix of 507-A and 507-C, so I should theoretically be able to make my own acrylic 507-B. Can anyone confirm these ratios?

That mixing ratio is confirmed by information on the HMS Hood Association website.Frank O'Neill wrote:Hi Timmy-

It's such a shame none of the Queen Elizabeths were saved. If there was ever a battleship worthy of it, it was one of these.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
I imagine Testors came to the same conclusion - if they had to penny-pinch and pick two of the three to produce, A and C makes the most sense if it's a straight-forward 1:1 mix for a B.Frank O'Neill wrote:Hi Timmy-

Hoping that the mix of those two Testor colors would give the same result. But on the other hand, you'll find many patches of different shades of gray on a ship that's supposed to be an even 507B, so no problems there.

Does anyone have pictures pictures showing her DG cable?
And I know they were moved inside during her USA repair/refit.
Found something again from British Pathe films. Took me some hours. Clip named Troops arrive at a middle east port. Dated 1946 but clearly 1940. Shows Warspite with DG.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hello,
may I have overseen it in that 25 pages here, so sorry in advance if this is the case.
In Academy kit of HMS Warspite are 2 small lifeboats -beside the big ones which are positioned between funnel and cranes, also left and rigt of aft mast- in sprue "F". Unfortunatelly it is not told in instruction where this small ones have to be installed to. So I'm not sure if they are only superluous inside the kit and, too, looking in gallery here, they are sometimes not installed and if installed on several different places. Original which fotos I know or have do not show them really, but maybe on one of them (I can and will not show, because unclear copyright issue) are the arms of david pulleyes visible between the two 10.2cm twin guns.
Does anyone know more about / has informations about?
Cheers,
Christian

HMS Valiant cranes...
Were "bent arm type". How have I overlooked this in photos until now...
Can I use the ones in Repulse instead of QE?
AArghh!

Hi
Perhaps was this already discussed but I can't find anything about this when searching in the forum so I ask here :
what about painted/unpainted barrel section near muzzle of british 15inch guns ?
sometimes it looks evident they are unpainted, but -especially with multicoloured camos- on other pictures, barrels seem to be painted.
it is sometimes hard to be sure with black and white pictures.
or is it a prewar/war matter ? (unpainted during prewar period ?)
some modelers certainly use some artistic licence because I can find pictures of models of WWII 1943 Queen Elizabeth in both configurations.
thank you

Queen Elizabeth 1944/45
Could anyone help me with information regarding the 1944/45 BPF QE? In particular, the twin powered oerlikons, universally listed as 29 in number, and six of which were sited, three each side, on the boat deck, directly behind the pom poms. If you look at page 15 of the Shipcraft Queen Elizabeth Class Battleships by Les Brown there is a picture of a late 1943 QE, after the 20 mm twins were installed and with them actually quite visible. The question I have is: What were the dimensions of the platform on which they were sited. They clearly superfire over the pom poms, so they were raised either in individual stands or on some sort of(probably rectangular) stand which accomodated the three. Raven and Roberts, who do confirm the disposition of the mountings, do say that information on the 1944/45 QU is a little scarce, but with what you have it looks as if it would be easy to convert the Trumpeter 1/350 kit to that period if we knew exactly what was going on on that boat deck. The boats had been moved to the deck where the catapult had been, it having been removed in the last refit, so if you would happen to know the precise number and placing of the boats that would be good. Any information, or even a consensus of opinion, would be greatly appreciated.

Trumpeter's HMS Warspite 1915, whats the verdict ? Is it accurate, how is different from the already released HMS Queen Elizabeth 1918 ?
Comparing the HMS Queen Elizabeth 1918 with the Warspite's 1915 instructions I see no difference whats so ever, I fear is just a HMS Queen Elizabeth 1918 reboxed with a HMS Warspite artwork...
Thanks in advance.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hello,
I hope I didnt miss this somewhere in the forum but can someone please tell me what colour (WEM Colourcoats) the Warspite`s steeldecks were painted in 1942 and 1943? I think I will use 507B and 507C for the camouflage but I am not sure with the decks...
Thank you!
Cheers Ingo
