I came across a really great 1/100 Bismarck build (in French) and thought I'd share:

It's one of those builds that makes one want to go chuck their project in the garbage, but sometimes we just need a pie in the sky to reach for! :lol_spit_1:

I would like to know as well.

Your picture also has a view of the steel deck where the bridge wings extend from. This along with the aft radar/rangefinder deck should be steel too. They did use wood grating on the open bridge and forward aft rangefinder deck area over the steel.
I have the Pontos deck (which is super in detail and a very good price compared to others) and have seen this on other wood decks and most kits as planked. I know Tirpitz aft rangefinder was planked but not Bismarck based on the wreak pictures.
If anyone has authoritative information to contradict this please show us.

Yes that's the arrangement.

It seems to me that it's a steel deck and we can see gratings in this picture. Regarding the aft command post deck on Bismarck you are right. Regarding Tirpitz the deck was only partially planked and also had steel deck with gratings.

that is amazing Antonio, but the turret tops and barrels (ends) are yellow with false bow and stern in dark grey. When was this used?

kabelodeovo wrote:I bought barrels for my Bismarck 1/200 and comparing with the barrels that came with the kit, they are completely different. My intention is discover which is more accurate. See picture below, the barrel on the top came with the kit and the other one I bought on the Ebay as part of one set of barrels.

Image

Converting the size you informed to 1/200 scale (in centimeters) the dimensions are:

A=0,47 cm
B= 1,12 cm
C= 1,89 cm
D= 3,02 cm

Trumpeter barrel:

A=0,5 cm
B= 1,49 cm (not match)
C= 1,89 cm
D= 3,1 cm
Total length 7,5 cm.

Ebay barrel:

A= 0,8 cm
B= 0,9 cm
C= 1,6 cm
D= 3,3 cm
Total length 7 cm.

So the Trumpeters barrel, despite the dimension B, looks like more accurate.

DANK!

Hello ;-)
I am working on my version of 38cm SKC-34 barrel in 1-200 scale. As usually I don't want to offer just piece of metal which is only similar to any barrel. Unfortunately the "e-bay" barrel is one of these which is only similar. The Trumpeter's one is really accurate, but in my opinion the rear part has a bit different proportions. The total length of Trumpeter barrel is correct. The biggest failure is that.... there is only two metal barrels in the box ;-)

But plastic barrel is much more accurate than "ebay" one!

"ebay" barrel is useless... Really...

To my design I use real dimensions received from one of my Dutch friend. But I have measures of the barrel and breech mechanism. The only one part which is not measured is the rear part, where the actual barrel is hidden in the turret collar. But I took the proportion from the pictures and Anatomy. When I have prototype I will take some pics and I will share!

See you soon!

For more than two years Ive been reading books and articles about the battleship Bismarck, but last week I had a good surprise, I found one picture from Bismarck that I had never seen before. In my opinion the picture is very interesting, and Id like to correct just one details in the pictures text, the correct is turret C not turret D in dark grey color.

I could easily be wrong, but that photo just looks fake to me. Where did you find it? Thanks

I don't believe that JOHN ASMUSSEN & ERIC LEON have published a fake picture!
You will find this picture in the page 38 of the book GERMAN NAVAL CAMOUFLAGE, VOLUME ONE 1939 - 1941

More info here : http://www.bismarck-class.dk/books/camo ... vol_1.html

Thanks for the info. No, I don't think John would publish a fake photo in his book, but what I find funny is that when I first looked at the photo that you posted, I said to myself that this reminds me of a fake photo that John Asmussen made years ago. Let me explain.

Apparently, someone was taking photos from John's website, but was claiming the photos as his own, or something like that. So in order to prove that this person was getting his photos from John's website, John created a fake photo and briefly posted it on his website to apparently entice this person to copy it, and since this photo didn't exist anywhere else (because John created it), that would prove that the photo in fact came from John's website. That photo had a silhouette of a German fighter in it, somewhat similar to what I see in the photo you posted, which is what made me immediately think of John's old fake. Perhaps John was inspired by the photo you posted when he made the fake?

Thanks once again for posting this, and letting me know where it came from.

The caption says that the dark of C was painted over. So, it's not dark anymore. Why do you think he mixed up letters?

Anyway, there is one important detail visible in that photo, a detail he still insists was being altered. He may can get letters in the correct order, but that's it.

I don't have the book at hand right now. Who is given credit for the photo?

Happy searching ~ Olaf!

Whats interesting is that the barrels don't look to have been painted over yet in the dark grey, at least on Cesar. hmmmm

What detail are you speaking of Olaf?

Don't worry about it. If you're building a model, whatever time frame, you will get it right without me or anyone else pointing it out.

Olaf, my mistake!
English is not my mother language, I speak Portuguese. It was a translation mistake. I thought that the author said that the turret C was painted in dark grey, but you are correct "the dark of C was painted over. So, it's not dark anymore".
Thanks :smallsmile:

Hello, I am brand new to the forum and I have a couple of ship builds that have done well in Region 12 shows. I build just about every thing but I think my niche is going to be in ship building. I also research my subjects extensively almost to a fault. So, any help with some Bismark detail questions would be greatly appreciated.

I intend on building her(him) on or near May 21st 1941 using the 1/200 Trumpy model with Pontos and MRK 1 photoetch/resin.

FS or equivalents for the 50 / 51 paint, and dunkelgrau 2. Some horizontal surfaces on the superstructure look to me to be the same color as the vertical surfaces of the superstructure and some are darker. Am I seeing this correctly?

I see the GHG microphones on one website and on the Trumpeter model but I cannot find this on any drawings that I have found. Did this listening device really exist? Were the dots open holes or was there a membrane or diaphram of some sorts. Were there more sea chests, sea intakes than what is on the model? If so, are there any drawings in existance dipicting locations?

Were the flags flown similar to US Navy. Jacks in port, Ensigns, Admirals?

Did they keep any Arados ready on the catapults or were they all kept in the hangers until time to launch?

Now this question is one that I am pulling my hair out with. Do the 1.6M searchlights have louvers inside of thier lenses? Searchlights that I have seen have a parabolic mirror in the back. I know that the signaling lamps had them, off-on, off-on. Please help me with this one!

One more. Were the life rings really orange?

Again, thanks for any help.

I can answer a couple of these questions at least.

1. I am NOT the guy to ask about paint but in researching my build I came to the conculsion that Bismarck got repainted on a daily basis with every possible combination of colors. :heh: Sorry, that wasn't much help, was it? Anyway, you'll probably have to just go with your educated guess in the end.

2. Look at 109's 1/100 Bismarck build for the best example of the GHG microphones (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=57213). In reality the holes were offset seemingly at random in a upside down "U", unlike the kit which shows them all straight and nice. At 1/200 scale the effect looks like a builder who can't line up holes to save his life, but that's what reality was.

3. No clule on flags... I haven't gotten that far myself.

4. I'm absolutely sure the Arados would have been in their garages until it was time to launch them. Otherwise, why have garages for all of them? I doubt they would have lasted long out in the open on the North Atlantic and they were not deployed for Operation Rhineburg (though at the end they attempted to launch one with all of Bismarck's secret documents but failed because they couldn't get the catapult to work). I have never seen a picture of the Bismarck's Arados even out of the garages on the ship. Still, it's a shame to skip them on a model ship build, which is why they are almost always displayed out on the catapults.

5. I'm pretty sure the searchlights had louvers outside the lens only... still if they did have 'em inside it would be an impossible to detect that detail at 1/200 scale.

6. I've seen them done both reddish orange or dark grey/black. I'd guess it depends on the paint scheme; I assume they were bright colors with the prewar paint scheme and painted dark when Bismark got her Baltic Camo.

Hope that helps and hope I'm right; I'm no expert and knew absolutely nothing about the ship before I started building one a few months ago.
