The shorter (L35) barrels in the midship turret were kept from the original design. The longer guns (L40) for the end turrets became only available after the construction was already started. The midship guns are the original ones, the end turrets were an improvement during construction. If the L40s would not have been ready in time, the Brandenburgs would have gotten only L35 guns.cerberusjf wrote:That's very interesting! I often wondered why they chose shorter barrels for the middle turret, so wonder why the ship length was so critical?? I seem to remember the reading the ram was designed in such a way that it would do deep damage, specifically to one of the French pre-dreadnoughts (Bouvet I think). Brandenburgs certainly had presence!!DariusP wrote:Brandenburg class was WAY ahead of their time as they wereAfter all, the next class with all main guns on the centerline was the Knig class of 1913. The length of the hull seems to have been an important factor for the designers since they decided to opt for shorter barrels in midship turret rather than having hull longer by this, relatively small, amount....

Thanks for the tip! I managed to get a couple of their French kits, I like the fact that they can be built full hull

Some first notes on the Kombrig Brandenburg which arrive last week.
In order to annoy DariusP (...-:)) it is the 1905 version. That does mean there's a Weissenburg/Haireddin Barbarossa in the works. Hull form and details seem to right compared to drawings in Nottelman though the ship does seem to sit a bit low in the water. Maybe add an extra mm in styrene sheet. Vents are standard middle size Kombrig so they will have to be replaced. Small parts, guns and boats are all in resin and look very sharp. All parts for the superstructure are supplied as a combination of PE and resin and there's a gorgeous piece of PE representing the bow decorations. This is a very complex built-up however and the instructions are the usual Kombrig 2 A4 size pieces of paper. The instructions explicitly mention that boat details are omitted, which happens to be most complex part of the kit.... The build ups of the HMV paper kit at kartonbau.de are needed to make sense of these details. This is not a reason not to buy the kit however. External references are readily available and it really is a very nice kit for medium experienced modelers and upwards from that.

Hello,
I recently started my Kombrig Kurfuerst Fr. Wilh. and haven't a clue what a lot of the PE is for, especially the narrow strips. Are they some construction for the boats? Any help here greatly appreciated.

Bob Cicconi's build of the Brandenburg-class Pre-Dreadnought SMS Weissenburg was posted to the gallery.

Well, ok... I received my Hayreddin Barbarossa kit today. As expected (I had not read this before ordering it) I have no idea how to build the various boat structures and a couple of other details.Pieter wrote:Some first notes on the Kombrig Brandenburg which arrived last week.

Check this thread about 1:100 RC Brandenburg Peter: http://modellbauer.forum-aktiv.com/t179 ... rg-1100-rc While not Hayreddin Barbarossa, you still might find it helpful
And than there is this site: http://www.the-blueprints.com/blueprint ... p)_turkey/ but I have no idea how accurate those drawings are...

Re: Calling all SMS Brandenburg class Pre-Dreadnought fans
I have WSW's Schleswig-Holstein (1939) and I have some questions. I want to model the ship in 1939 and wish to know what colours she was painted in at the opening of WW2 and also what her light AA fit was at that time. The kit contains a flakvierling (I'd be surprised if she had that in 1939!) and Several single 20mm guns.
thanks
Mike

Re: Calling all SMS Brandenburg class Pre-Dreadnought fans
There is on the internet a paper model of a Schlesien class pre-dreadnought as in 1939. You might have to hunt for it - it's a print of a Polish kit, and the instructions are useless - but if you find it and save it you can do what I did and have two or three attempts before you finally get anywhere near succeeding. In adddition there is a fantastic book (probably now out of print) called @the Complete encuclopedia of Battleships and Battlecruisers', by Tony Gibbons which illustrates every class from 1860-1970 and has a picture of Schesien in 1939 colours

Re: Calling all SMS Brandenburg class Pre-Dreadnought fans
Interesting - I wonder; when they found the 35s & 40s were incompatible at long range due to the flatter ballistics of the longer guns, why didn't they replace the 40s with 35s to make them compatible, & use the 40s on a new class?Guest wrote: The shorter (L35) barrels in the midship turret were kept from the original design. I am both...the Brandenburg's were "Pre-Dreadnoughts" only in that they were built before HMS Dreadnought herself. despite what Jane's (a British publication!) may claim the Brandenburg's were the first "All-big-gun" or "Dreadnought" design, dispensing with the intermediate (15-25cm) cruiser caliber guns in favor of more main battleship (>25cm) guns, with the tertiary anti-torpedo boat QF guns becoming the secondaries (by default). something the British avoid mentioning is that, at the time these ships were built the 3rd Sea Lord of the Admiralty (the guy in charge of acquiring new weapons & examining foreign designs) was Sir Jackie Fisher, hmmm coincidence???(can we say plagiarism)! Anyway (end rant) I just mounted & based my 2400 scale squadron of Brandenburg class Dreadnoughts & am starting to paint them, any tips on the painting of them. here's some pics, they were based white, the deck came out good but tried to adjust the other 2 to see detail & caused them to look dirty.DariusP wrote:John, Brandenburg class was WAY ahead of their time as they wereAfter all, the next class with all main guns on the centerline was the Knig class of 1913.
