In 1/700 by Fujimi sometime in 2014. No news on 1/350.

When were the Japanese flags painted on top of Mogami's and Mikuma's turrets? I know they were marked like this during the Battle of Midway, but did they carry those flags also in Sunda Strait?

Question about the 1/350 1942 Mogami from Tamiya. It appears that they give the late-war bridge and wind deflectors. I am right to assume this is incorrect for the 42 version?

Yes, those where added just before the ill-fated Midway campaign.

Thanks. What is confusing to me is that Tamiya is in contradiction to Lacroix and Wells. Lacroix and Wells states the wind baffle/AA observation platform went in early 1943. I'm not sure which source is correct.

If you look at the photos the USN took of Mikuma at Midway, you can see the baffles below the bridge windows. I haven't seen any shots of Mogami's bridge in the same time frame to confirm her rig.

I was wondering that. It does look like baffles below the windows.

Re: Calling all Mogami-class (最上) fans
This is a tough one that seems to defy the common wisdom. It's pretty much acknowledged that refits that included wind baffles and AA command positions were not added to the heavy cruisers until 1943, yet it does seem like the 4 ships of Sentai 7 received some sort of upgrade when they entered drydock in late April or early May 1942. A single set of wind baffles below the compass bridge deck windows may likely have been added at this point, but I am surprised to see any sort of AA command position as I don't believe the necessity of such a position would have been apparent until AFTER Midway. Still, while the Mikuma Midway photos are not crystal clear, there may be something up there after all. Interesting and unexpected. Good eye, Joe.

Thanks Dan. When I build this ship I am leaning towards baffles below the compass bridge, but no AA observation platform or baffles up top.

That's what my initial take on it was.

Re: Calling all Mogami-class (最上) fans
I pondered this myself. But the pictures from Midway do show the baffles. They are smaller than the baffles you guys are referring to in 1943 refits. I also wanted the more plain bridge. But it would have ate me up knowing they were there.

For GMG4RWF, who requested photos of the 20cm mounts from the re-gunned versions. All from Nihon no Gunkan v.07

Wouldn't a (hopefully) new Tamiya 1/700 Mogami (pre-refit to a/c cruiser) bring at least some relief to you
? http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10325395 Let us see how it will come out...

Fascinating. I wonder if they are just going to use the Mikuma kit, remarketed. Like they did with their "new" Yorktown kit.
