Mike, I just placed the wood deck right over the kit part. I wiped it down with alcohol first to clean it up.

I thought I'd post up some more progress pics. Still slow going, but I have added a lot of the smaller details, some of the railing, stairs, etc. Man, these close up pics sure show the mistakes!











Question for you other 1/200 builders - do you plan to fill in the windows with "glass" or leave them open?

I'm hard-pressed to find any mistakes. She's looking gorgeous.

As for the windows, I have lofty ambitions to put clear styrene in the bridge windows... hopefully with some open and some closed. I figure the portholes would have all been open in the South Pacific unless the ship was in battle (I don't think this beast had air conditioning)... but then the solid porthole shields would have been up.

Very nice, great small detail! As a note there should be six stanchions each side supporting the bridge wings and the w/t door directly aft of turret two should be vertical, it would be hard to open the door if it was inclined. Can post photos of either area if there is any interest.

Just love the detail of the wheels on the foredeck controlling the capstans and winches.

Can't comment on your recent work since this morning the pictures are not showing up; perhaps if I log on later today they will appear.

Your comment re. air conditioning - I'm not positive, but I think the a/c was added right before or just after WWII ended. These units were all chilled water units - we had them during the mid-60's on NEW JERSEY and I don't know that they were replaced in the '80's, but more than likely they were.

I think the Iowa's had air conditioning in some of the critical spaces such as the CIC etc. More fluff for the effete Americans in the view of the Royal Navy, or IJN. The beatings will continue till morale improves....

BB-64 still has "chilled water units" from the 1980's refit; they're ALL over the place. Heard them called swamp coolers as well. They run the outside air through them and cool it down a little (5 or so degrees in middle of summer at high noon I've heard) and then pump it throughout the ship.

We have AC aboard and if you look at BB-62's plans you can see AC Machinery rooms on the 3rd deck I believe with the forward most room(s) taking the place of the vacated 5" mags (the ones displaced by the missiles). I have seen "Air Conditioning Boundary" signs on some doors, mainly around the bridge, but that doesn't mean there couldn't have been more as they look like they were simply glued on.

From what I've heard, it was mainly computer rooms and "combat spaces" that had proper AC while the rest had to make due with the recirc system. I'm not sure about berthing though...

I've seen plenty of ducting that says "Recirc Sys" on it. What would the AC system use? Same ducts? Would it be labeled "AC Sys" or something similar? I'll try and keep an eye out.

Swamp coolers are used extensively in the SW US. They use evaporative cooling of Water to lower the air temp. They work well in a dry climate, but possibly not so well in humid tropics. Much less energy consumption than a refigerative system. I would expect that the recirc system is part of the humidity control that has been used for preservation of the ships interior. The ability of the ships interior to be conserved by these methods has been quite effective. I remember going through many ships in the mothball fleet back in the 60's and it looked like everyone had just gone out for lunch.

Fantastic work!!! I'm going to make a comment here - not on your work, but on the kit - I just have a nagging feeling that the windows are too small to be scaled correctly. They seemed larger in most photos and my personal recollection of NEW JERSEY. I haven't really looked at the parts in my kit or the Pontos PE replacements, but I will do so next week when I'm back at my shop.

Looks to be that the window line should drop below the bulwarks of the bridge wings. Hesitant to mention this and not even suggest you change it. The only reason is that some other builders might want to check this out. The OTB kit will make a spectacular model with addition of some aftermarket parts as this example shows. Few who haven't been involved with these ships would ever know.

I spent a lot of time in China and it is an interesting mix of the very good and very casual. Look at some of the detail items, it's the big stuff they often didn't case to pursue far enough.

This build will be absolutely first rate when completed and could grace any office or home as a real attention getter! Wish my scratch efforts looked so precise and clean!

Thanks for all the info guys. I don't plan on making any major corrections or changes to the kit. But I certainly don't mind you all pointing things out and sharing your wealth of information, it makes us all aware and better modelers. We all enjoy the hobby in our own way, and while I like an accurate model as much as anybody, I also don't want to get completely bogged down to the point where I'll never finish it. I agree, it will make an impressive model when finished - despite some of the accuracy issues. Thanks again for the comments!
