Hi

This is Kelly Quirk's build and a fine job indeed. I have a 1:192 build of the modern BB63 over in the scratch section, which is currently on hold for the summer as I am away from home.

Feel free to ask questions anywhere, though the calling all ship fans section is probably best. A great site and everyone very helpful.

Hello Kelly,

Fantastic detail on your model.

You mentioned using Model Master paints for this kit.. What color did you go with for your hull red? I am just about done with collecting parts for my build and needed to settle on a hull color. My build will be a few months prior to yours, sometime around the surrender, but not that day.. :-)

Thanks,
Robert

Not to horn in, but you might consider gunze Mr Color hull red. It is however a lacquer and coagulates with a wrong thinner! Be interesting to see what Kelly has used as his results do look quite convincing.

Sorry I should have clarified - I used a mix of some of my very old Floquil Marine colors. I mixed some of my Hull Red with some Iron Oxide. I'm pretty sure they don't even make these paints any longer, but I've always loved them.

Hi Kelly,

This is awesome work :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: . I also went to your web site and enjoyed the other stuff you have done - truly excellent!

Can you be more specific about the Model Master paint you are using? I'm getting ready to start mine and would like to use the same shades you have used.

Thanks,
Don

Hi Don,

Here are the paints I used for the Haze Gray and Deck Blue:

I used my old Floquil paint for the Navy Blue, but Model Master makes this shade (5-N) as well:

And as I said above, I used a mix my old Floquil paints to come up with the Hull Red, but again you can get it from the Model Master line:

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Kelly - yes, thanks!!! Once again, great work. Was that your carrier with the lighted hanger bay at IPMS Nats?

Not at this year's Nats. The last ship I built was the USS Harry S. Truman, which competed in the 2009 Nats. But yes, it had lights in the hangar bay and island.

Loved the old Floquil paints for Model Railroads. I never did see the marine series. I do remember the oxide red and probably had an old bottle somewhere.

Results speak for themselves!

Hi, Kelly, great work. I have one question, do they have crew members in this scale of 1/200? I think it would be wonderful to see the ship manned.

Kelly:

Your work is most impressive; your progress shots are a real guide for my work. Can't thank you enough.

So, when it comes to the PE here, is Pontos the best around? I have access to Pontos, Eduard, and MK1. Any thoughts?

Have you had any problems with gluing your deck down? I am using the blue-green 1945 deck from Pontos, but was wondering.
