Make drilling your portholes fast and hassle-free!

Post by sgtryan13 »

Maybe this is an old-school trick, but I don't recall seeing it anywhere. I was actually pretty irritated that I had not thought of this long ago.

Anyways, as we all know, that for drilling out portholes, you either take hours and use a hand-held pin vise with an appropriate sized drill bitt, or you use a rotary tool drill, and risk melting the plastic and having differently sized holes.

The super simple solution I came up with is just put a drop of water over each porthole, and then use a dremel (rotory tool) to quickly drill out each porthole. That tiny drop of water is enough to keep the drill bitt cool, and not melt any plastic.

I did this on the several hundred portholes on a 1/350 Dreadnought, and it took me about 10 minutes, with no melted plastic, and each hole perfectly centered and the same size as the rest.

Old-school or not, it's a great tip. Although I don't like opened portholes (old-school as well, eh?), since I think it doesn't add realism...

Anyway, happy drilling ~ Olaf!
