When you paint your decks...

.do you paint the whole thing, then after its dry, do you mask the deck part to paint the other stuff on it? Or how?

I tend to airbrush the whole deck with the deck colour and then, using a fine brush, paint the raised detail by hand.

I do the opposite (for steel decks at least) and airbrush the base colour then paint the deck by hand.

I find that I'm hopeless with a brush and always seem to leave brush strokes so I figure the smaller the area I have to brush the better

Same for me. Airbrush the whole thing, then figure out how to paint the raised details.

Thanks ! I just went ahead and painted the whole deck, ill just mask the deck part off.

I do what John and Chin Wen does. I don't bother with masking the deck, as a small enough brush generally means the paint wouldn't get on the deck...of course, it always manages to, lol.

I always start with deck details first. Complete one color, wrap the detail in tape and do the next until all details are complete and masked. Then do the deck colors. I think this gives a very clean application.(a littls time consuming)
