Hehe in that pic it looks like Turret 2 is pointed nearly straight at the camera man. Wonder if the force of the air movement of the shell passing that close would have sucked him off of the platform or balcony he was on.

What do the more knowledgable NY/TX fans think of sprue shots posted at http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10287087 ? Any major problems?

The hull is pictured wrapped in the plastic bag so the picture is washed out. I get the feeling the Texas will be the NY reboxed with a different paint scheme in the instructions. Good amount of PE for radar and rails as well as molded clear floatplanes.

In any case, at least it's a start -- I've always wanted a USS Texas having visited her several times in San Jacinto.

I got the Trumpeter 1/350 USS New York BB-34 kit #05339 a couple weeks ago. I'm not a very experienced ship builder but the kit looks fantastic. Surprisingly a lot of molded in detail. I've just barely started assembly and I'm trying not to rush anything. The hull is a 2 piece left and right instead of Trumpeter's usual upper and lower split. The main deck is a 2 piece front and back halves but went together fairly easily and the seam is hidden by the gun deck housing. I thought about converting it to the Texas but I began to notice little difference between the two ships and just decided to go ahead with the New York. The Texas kit is suppose to come out soon and I've already pre-ordered it. The kit comes with over 800 parts, (from what I have read and don't doubt it), and it's own photo-etch parts. Not very familiar with photo-etch and only had a small amount of experience with it so i would really welcome any insights from anyone on the best way to work with it.

Here's one I have not seen before. This is Texas Oct. '41 at NNY. Refit just about complete. She now sports a CXAM radar on top of her forward fighting top in place of the birdbath.

Looking for confirmation as to whether or not New York ever wore MS 22 while in her final fit-out. I've seen some photos that make it look like she's wearing it, possibly while en route to the Pacific where she was repainted in MS 31/8, but never with any text that might confirm this. I'm pretty sure that at some point in '45 she was repainted again in MS 21, but I'm not really too keen on building her in what amounts to a near-monochrome paint scheme (yes yes, I know there's a difference between the colors).

Thanks in advance! :)

Does anyone know how the Motor Whales Boats were painted on the USS New York in 1945?

Hi all, this is a Samek 1/700 Texas that I have been working on. I painted her in a Feb. 1945 look.

First time I am posting, and its the first 1/700 ship I have built in a while. Still thinking about adding rigging as a trial, as well as figures.

Hope y'all enjoy, any advice/criticism would be greatly appreciated.

That's...not the New York. Looks like the old Revell box-scale Arizona to me.

Yeah. This overly excited wife attached the USS Arizona BB 39. I was too excited that he finally opened 2 of the 4 ships I got him for our Anniversary I really thought it was the BB34. You can tell I don't know much about Ships but I'm trying to learn because I support his passion wholeheartedly and I encourage it. And we'll, I was too excited to share in on the thread when I saw it that I decided to post because he told me last week he wast starting with the USS NY so I never assumed he had changed his mind till I saw your post just now and noticed the differences and went full mouth with a big loud "OH CR * P". I woke my husband just to ask and dumbfounded he was like well you know ships better than guys at the hobby store, why are you playing dumb in the middle of the night" so I told him I posted the Arizona on the NY forum. He laughed, snorted, sat up and said: oh, this is a good one. I can't believe YOU of all people missed that one! And laughed real hard. Then he rolled over and chuckled back to sleep.
But He who has the last laugh they said...
I told him about I was so happy and proud to see he had started one of the models I had bought, I had been looking in to buying the 54" USS Missouri for him with the upgrade kit as well to match his 1/350 scale. He can kiss all that good bye cus he hurt my feelings. My husband might have an awesome wife. But, I'm not that awesome at the moment. And yes I'm still buying the model but he doesn't have to know it. LOL

Hello Jmona:

You are still an awesome wife! Good on yer for supporting his hobby and actually taking an interest in it. My wife, God bless her, is equally supportive and I appreciate all she does. I am sure your husband does as well.
Keep those cards and letters coming.

I received word that the USS Texas BB-35 was in stock and ready for ordering. Trumpeter's 1/350 model that I've been waiting so long for. :)

A friend of mine picked up the Texas kit. Looks to be good but the panel lines on the hull are WAY too pronounced. hopefully easilly fixable by a bit of sanding.

Panel lines are easy to sand down (though I'd suggest starting with a seam scraper tool to shave off the first 90% before laying in with the sanding sticks.) Re-shaping the bulges to anything close to correct is much harder.

I've got a Trumpeter Texas under way. A couple of notes. Looks very nice in the box, but there are a couple of subtle issues to watch out for. My hull halves were slightly warped - it didn't leave a big gap at the bottom, but the hull really fought having it pressed together. I wound up having to clamp the sides and then pressing at the turn of the bilge to get it close together. The deck structure over the casemate guns (piece F1) was also slightly warped, but does not resist being pushed into place. Second issue is that some of the pieces have some very subtle flash on the mating ends, so that if you don't take care to clean them up /sand them flat, you get bad fit.

One error that I wish to correct is with the deck over the casemate guns (Piece F1 again, known as the air castle to Texas' crew). The aft bulkhead is solid, but on the real ship it's open (pic), with no doors. The wood deck continues up inside this area (trumpeter leaves it smooth but I'm not going to scribe planking). I'm wondering how it was finished. I'm leaning towards unpainted wood due to this photo on her Navsource page. This baker is in the "Air Castle," where the bakery was located, and the wood just looks unpainted to me. The question this leaves, if it is unpainted wood, is how the transition was done. Did they extend Deck Blue a certain distance into the compartment or just end it at the overhang? Anyone know of any good period photos that might show this? I'm inclined to extend the paint in three scale feet if there are no firm answers

Oh it's all sorts of wrong, but I don't have any good hull lines or cross sections to figure out precisely where (if anyone can point me to some plans online I'd be more than happy to co a comparison and post the results). I think the top portion doesn't slope enough, for one, but I've found a lot of subtle problems in Trumpeter hulls that compound to create multitudes of problems. My suspicion is that fixing one problem would create a chain effect of issues. I know for example, due to the Booklet of General Plans, that the placement of the 5" casemate guns in the air castle is incorrect; the center point should essentially be right over the edge of the blister on the outboard guns, but they're not (I don't have mine with me at the moment, but I think they were noticeably inboard).

Also I had emailed the Texas museum and they answered my question. Since the air castles were open, the deck and bulkheads were not considered interior spaces. Thus, the deck was deck blue and the inboard bulkhead was Navy Blue. However, photos of the current-day ship suggest the outer bulkheads and overheads were white.

I thought the BB35 library website had cross sections but the site no longer comes up. I think I might some day take a saw to one of these kits and try to fix it. Of course I would also have to backdate it to 1941.
