Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
So the Chokai and Maya had the older styled bridge-faces (aside from any other differences I have yet to pick out - I only spent about three minutes on the photos, but noticed the changed mentioned in the text immediately).
Does the Fujimi kit have PE for the windows?
If it does, then I will get two Fujimi Chokais to use for the 1942 Chokai and Maya.
Wait.... They still have their Hangars, then, in 1942??? Just checking.

Oh, and is THIS the correct AotS book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/ ... 53&sr=1-12
The other one is in Japanese and costs a fortune ($75 - $150).

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Yes, that is the correct link for the AOTS Takao book.
Yes, Chokai And Maya did not have their bridge tops reduced, and yes, they still have their hangars in 1942.
As far as I can tell, the Fujimi frets DO NOT have bridge windows, which is very odd. (Please, anyone who can confirm that, please do.) FineMolds makes a PE fret, AM-35, the Basic Takao Class fret, each of which has bridge windows for a pre, and a post, reconstruction version. This fret was designed for the Pit-Road kits but, with a little adjustment, they worked fine with the Aoshima kits. I would suspect the same for the Fujimi versions.

I am pretty sure that I could get the Fine Molds' PE fret to work for the Fujimi kits. The bridges are not so dissimilar that some slight modification would not correct any problems arising with the windows.Dan K wrote:Yes, that is the correct link for the AOTS Takao book.

I am getting a little ahead of myself, too, due to not having my ADD medication prescription refilled (until later in this month - been without for two months). So it has been hard for me to concentrate on one build to completion (plus, even with them, I have the habit of working on a few ships at a time, so that while one ship is waiting for something to set, or for a part or reference to arrive in the mail, I can work on the others).
But I am a hard-core "planner," and having the list of what to build, and in what order, certainly helps. And the Takaos are in line after the Kinugasa/Aoba pair for 1942 are finished.
And... Ordered the AotS: Takao book. It should be here when I get back from CA around Christmas.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Correct, the Fujimi 1/700 PE for Chokai does not have bridge windows - see pictures I posted here on page 29. There are several IJN bridge windows PE sets that can be used, I used (if I remember it right) one by Rainbow, there is another one by Flyhawk etc.Dan K wrote:

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Hi Guys!
Some guidance please?
I was given a P.E set for my 1/350 Takao for Xmas, but I have the 1942 kit & the etch is for the 1944 fit...
How much, if any of it, can i use?
The kit came with a broken crane, so i'm kinda stuck with the etch version, but what else is viable?

Assuming you are referring to the first photo below, then it looks like that all but the radars should be viable. There are plenty of comprehensive PE sets out there. I did just notice that Aoshima has issued a more comprehensive PE set for the class as a retake. Sorta looks a bit like the GMM or WEM PE. Second photo.

Yeah, I have the 1st one. Good to know it's not wasted! But that 2nd set looks a bit busy!
Thanks, Dan!

Errrr.... What are the round things? The pt 6 bits?
If it's any consolation: This will help others less knowledgeable than myself! ( & there are very few...)

Yes, along with shields #s 7 & 8. Not for use on a '42.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Man! I can only hope that the Flyhawk 1/700 IJN Takao 1942/1944 set is as "busy" as that second set.
So far it looks to be pretty thorough for many details.
But it looks like I am going to have to buy a bunch of Shelf Oddity's IJN Deck Vents for the Takao, Atago, and Chokai (not yet decided if I am going to do the Maya in 1942 as well).
Heck.... I might as well get a ton of them for my Destroyers as well. And when I get around to doing the Hiei, and Kirishima, then I suppose I will need even more of them then.
In case you have not seen them, he makes them in 1/700 scale (as well as the Type 93 25mm AA guns you will need):
http://shelfoddity.com/index.php?route= ... path=20_64
They are 3D printed, so I would bet that you could get him/them to do a 1/350 set.
They also make some kick-ass Searchlights. They rival the Fine Molds' Searchlights in both 1/700 and 1/350. They are not clear, like the Fine Molds' Searchlights, but instead are made with a hollow body, which can be filled with clear Cyanoacrylate, making the searchlight look even more realistic than the painted clear searchlights.
Eventually I am going to do a 1/350 scale ship (as soon as I have the 1/700 fleets done for re-fighting the Solomons' campaign). And I am looking strongly at some of the well-represented IJN ships like the Takao-class, or possibly one of the Toku-gata Destroyers.

1/350 Aoshima TAKAO Q
HI
A simple question WRT this kit and its possibilities.
I am working my through the 1942 Retake version of this kit and notice there are large number of parts that won't be used.
Are these parts generic for their all of their cruiser kits or can another sister, or 1945 version, also be built from these parts?
Appreciate any insights.
Thanks.

Well, these are a mix of things. Some of these parts are from the original '44 Takao (H20/21), and others from the retake Maya and Chokai (M19) kits. Some are deck vents , others late war parts (H27), or just ship specific parts. Can't speak to all of them.

HI
Appreciate the answer, thanks. I had a lead on another kit but wanted something a bit different from the one I am currently building. Was hoping the spare parts would allow me to do something else.
