Model Monkey Deutsche Kriegsmarine Products

Post by ModelMonkey »

Model Monkey is happy to announce new 3D-printed products for Deutsche Kriegsmarine subjects.

First product ready is a set of accurate, highly detailed, one-part, domed, 4-meter SL-8 Rangerfinders for heavy warships of the Bismarck, Scharnhorst and Hipper classes as well as the planned H-Klasse super-battleships and the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin.
These rangefinders were very conspicuous features and most kits' rangefinders are out of scale, lack detail and/or have seams that are difficult to smooth.

These are available now in 1/100 (set of four), 1/200 (set of two and set of four), 1/350 (set of four), 1/400 (set of four), 1/570 (set of twelve), 1/600 (set of twelve) and 1/700 (set of twelve). [edited to include 1/100, 1/200, 1/400, 1/570 and 1/600]

The 4-meter SL-8 rangefinder served the 105mm anti-aircraft battery of many World War Two, heavy German Navy warships including Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, and the heavy cruisers Prinz Eugen, Admiral Hipper and Blcher. These rangefinders likely would have been carried by the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin and super-battleships of the planned H-Klasse.

Some part cleanup will be necessary. During the 3D printing process, a waxy substance is used to support certain part features. Although the parts are cleaned by Shapeways afterwards, some waxy residue may remain. It can be safely removed with water and a mild aqueous detergent like Dawn dishwashing detergent, baby shampoo (no conditioner) or "Simple Green" using an old, soft toothbrush, Q-tips or pipe cleaners. Customers report that "Bestine" and "Goo Gone" also work well.

During the printing process, liquid resin is cured by ultraviolet light. Microscopic bits of resin may remain uncured. Let your parts sit in direct sunlight for a few hours to fully cure the resin before painting.

Once your parts are fully cured, if desired, careful use of an inexpensive air eraser emitting common household baking soda can help smooth surfaces and remove any unwanted frost. Similar to an airbrush but much cheaper, air erasers can be found on Amazon.com. Models by Harbor Freight and Paasche are popular.

Water-based acrylic paints meant for plastics is strongly recommended. Other paints, especially enamels, may not cure on Frosted Detail 3D-printed plastics.

Model Monkey Book and Hobby. This 3D-printed item may not be copied or recast.

How about generic, or Kriegsmarine mines in 1/350. Nobody wants to make them. :wave_1:

Thanks so much, fellas!

Yes, more DKM subjects coming in a little while, including highly detailed directors.

Regarding mines, just need some good, dimensioned, 2D drawings to see if they can be printed. If they can, I'll add them to the queue.

1/400 scale SL-8 Rangefinders are ready: http://www.shapeways.com/product/XZ2T7V ... et-of-four

These should be a big help to fans of 1/400 scale Airfix, Heller and JSC (card models).

Hi,
The parts you make are incredible. These new parts for Sharnhorst and Gneisenau look great. Is there any chance you might consider making a new stack cap for the 1/700 Fujimi Deutschland/Lutzow? I'm referring to the taller stack cap that was used when the ship served in Norway and later. The Fujimi kit can be rather easily backdated to this period, but I've always been concerned about being able to add and accurate stack cap for this period. Thanks.

Thanks, Rick!

Regarding Deutschland/Lutzow, I have no authoritative, dimensioned 2D drawings from which to design a 3D-printed Deutschland/Lutzow stack cap. If you can provide good references I'd be happy to give it a look and see.

Yes, May 10-12 42 would work for that cap.
