Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
One area that seems to have been overlooked are what details lie beneath Hood's waterline. The subsurface torpedo tubes are well documented but there seems to be very few photographs or drawings of what I assume must be a multitude of inlets/outlets/bilges and screens. Or maybe there was very little detail.
Does anyone have any info or else the hull of this 4 foot + model will look rather plain and dull.

Good shout Mr Pete. Hull detail is often not included in any kits eh.. It's the same with Bismarck, her hull is full of holes!!Mr Pete wrote:One area that seems to have been overlooked are what details lie beneath Hood's waterline. Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
Hi All
Funnily enough I'm in the process of getting some plans of Hoods bridges and shelter deck from the NMM at the moment, they are quite expensive and I did ask for a copy of the plan designated 'holes in ships bottom'.
Unfortunately I was told that this plan was now too fragile to copy and so was unavailable. I don't know if anyone managed to obtain one prior to this but I would guess that there would be water inlet and outlets and bilge fire pump flooding and drainage holes too.
Perhaps if the plan of the hold deck is still available this would also show these openings?
Best wishes
Cag.

The best drawing would be the shell expansion plan.

No kidding.Timhan wrote:This is beginning to remind me of car trips with the kids _ "Are we THERE yet !!!).
To be honest, it's a bit much these days, get a model, find out it's not accurate, and then go online to find a gazillion after market products to make it "more accurate"
I spent $500+ on a 1/200 Yamato, $160 for accurate turrets, $70 on a wood deck, and $178 on photo etch.
Why can't they just make it accurate in the first place? I built my Missouri, Bismarck, and Arizona out of the box. (though I wish I had could have afforded detail sets)
When I get to my 1/200 Hood, I'm going to get the Pontos set and the Shapeways funnel that replaces the inaccurate one and call it a day.
I think I'm going to have to get a second job to pay for this hobby. Anyone need a Lyft?
End of rant.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
I tend to agree. It's annoying having to buy so many additional parts simply because the companies are too lazy to bring accurate kits out. I'm planning on doing the same. I've already ordered a stern funnel from shapways. I'm hoping that Pontos include two sets of etch for the forward funnel in each kit.tardis1916 wrote:No kidding.Timhan wrote:This is beginning to remind me of car trips with the kids _ "Are we THERE yet !!!).

Hopefully Pontos releases a lite and full detailed set for this. I'm afraid that with the numerous additions suggested from our hood experts the unit price for a complete set has gone up to stratospheric levels and possibly beyond the budget for many modellers who cannot afford to spend double on the initial model just for ultra fine details that they might not care about

So Kim, are those last two images the hawsepipes? If so, does the wooden deck have the correct cut out to suit your corrected shape?

You're going to get a really good set in the same ball park as Pontos Model's other 1/200 scale offerings which most would surely agree are the most comprehensive and accurate on the market.

Wooden deck will be modified to fit for these new parts.
And already retail price is determined and additional parts or works have killed our profit and time more but we try to do for more perfection.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
As for the Funnel.
As I mentioned before we would not spend more time for Funnel matters.
We recommend 3 ways.
1. To use as kit funnel parts as they are.
We basically put PE frets for these kit parts without modification.
We will layout and make two PE frets one for large funnel and other for small one
2. Cut the large funnel to make same size with smaller one.
This might make easier way for making same size of both funnels.
For this we can sell extra PE fret for small funnel for these users.
3. The last is some harder work . Cut and Prolong some m-meters the small Funnel to do same size.
Also for this, we can sell extra PE fret for large funnel for these users.
This is all what we would do. please don't ask to design or supply for third part resin parts or others.
Thank you

Hi Kim,
Thank you for offering the additional funnel frets. I think many of our customers will want to buy an additional fret to have equal size funnels. I already have emails from customers asking me to supply the extra frets.
This set is attracting more attention than usual, and in the UK in particular HMS Hood is a very popular subject. I think and hope that you may still make some profit on this set as I believe it will sell more units.

Re: Pontosmodel 1/200 HMS Hood 1941 Detail Set
I concur with EJ. In the end, Hood did not have domed covers on her HACS.EJFoeth wrote:
Note that HMS Hood was fitted with both the HACS Mk II and later Mk III. There is quite some variation between the directors among ships, but for HMS Hood the Mk III did not have that large bulging cover.
She DID have them at one point though: she was fitted with three HACS Mk III during her 1939 refit (first the forward two and later the aft one). As originally fitted, they did indeed use large dome-like canvas covers. This is shown in the official diagrams as well as numerous late 1939 photos (to include the now famous colour film). This changed sometime in 1940 though.
From then on, we no longer see the large domed canvas covers. This is because the HACS (now Mk III*) were modified as shown in photo A 174 above. As EJ noted, they DID still use a canvas, but it was more or less flat and confined to just the openings (no large dome). You can see evidence of this in the close-up photo above (look for the tie downs/grommet hooks) and in one or two 1940/41 shots we have in our collections (see example below).
So, please discard the domes.

No problem.
We would put 3 HACS of the first photo. Right?

Yes, that is right. By the way, I added an image to my previous post (which shows how the HACS openings were covered).Pontosmodel wrote:No problem.

Well this cover can be realized easily by modellers not by us.FW_Allen wrote: Yes, that is right. By the way, I added an image to my previous post (which shows how the HACS openings were covered).

Also note that the base of the HACS was a bit shorted, see drawing. (Again open version). I assume you found this page? Good source material.

EJ is once again correct. The uncovered HACS is good, but you need to reduce the height of the base. Also note the flattened flange. Here's a photo collage:EJFoeth wrote:Also note that the base of the HACS was a bit shorted, see drawing. (Again open version). I assume you found this page? Good source material.
