Hasn't arrived yet; The kit is done, but Pavel was having problems getting the decals printed. I'll check in with him hopefully this weekend to see what's shaking....

The Astute is shipping and ready. There were a lot of problems with it, almost like with the real one. However, the 1/700 scale is most probably not going to be done at this point. We had ours very far along when HobbyBoss announced theirs and I felt it was worth getting the project finished, after all. But the 1/350 is ready

The Astute incident of 08 APR, although tragic does afford at least one tidbit for the modeler. The extended masts are certainly more green than grey, or grey molted as on US SSN's.

Anyone know what the pre-fouled colour color of the the sonar dome on Vanguard Class SSBNs are? I'm working on a Bronco kit right now and it's the one area I'm undecided on. Based on the links below I'm going to use Model Master's Aircraft interior black for most of the hull, with a section of gloss black from the middle of the hull up to the bottom of the bow dive planes, and flat black in the walking/non-skid area:

(Note the red outline around the vents on the bottom of the hull... should be fairly easy to do on the kit with a wash)
But the sonar area is always covered by cloth or water.

Another question; anyone know of any photos of the missile silos opened to use as a paint guide?

I'm currently building Bronco's Vanguard and Victorious and have a question. Looking at the model, on the sides of the subss near the missile housing, on the model there is a recess of sorts but when I look at photo's of the real subs (see link) there seems to some plating added. It doesn't seem to extend below the waterline Is this added for extra protection or when entering port ?? It would disrupte the flow of the water quite severly ??

It looks like a more recent feature. It's not on the earlier photos, but is on the more recent ones. I would suspect a new type of array or damage repair for a collision Vanguard had with Triomphant in 2009.

I have the same model and saw the same feature. I believe it is a Type 2043 hull-mounted active and passive search sonar that was integrated in the class in 2009.

I finally found something I knew I had. I recorded a news report when Astute ran aground and a picture of the propulsor was visible during the report. As it appeared in a TV report, I assume it had been cleared for public display; usually security is tight on this sort of image.

Looks like a gray primer color perhaps? I wonder if the after set is the same color or would they be a traditional brass?

They're never brass. Bronze if anything, but keep in mind that bronze will dull up in the water.

Note how gray sections of the surface look. I'm wondering if the vanes in question are merely a weathered bronze and not painted.

Anyone here of any 1/350 Churchill class kits being produced? Sort of surprising Airfix never made one considering the HMS Conqueror is the only SSN to ever sink an enemy combatant ship.

Airfix are not very interested in ships/boats. Their Illustrious kit is proof of that! When they released it they announced they would only be making kits of ships still in service and I think that apart from Illustrious they only did Trafalgar and Daring.
