I have red the threat now. I am not unhappy with what I got, I just wish they both would be the same more or less. For the prize I paid I got a lot of plastic! I am debating now if I should waterline her after seeing some very nice dioramas. And of course if I want an Intrepid, a carrier I have set foot on, or maybe a Hancock like my WWII Trumpi is going to be...
Looks like this is a feature of all SCB-25/125 Islands. I have been able to find pictures of the preserved ones...Intrepid, Lexington and Hornet. On the others my pictures are too bad
Unfortunately this forum alows only tiny pics to be linked...not sure why since it does not chew up forum server space. Some of those are much bigger and thats what you want for research...

Yes indeed, it is a common feature for all modernized islands of the Essex class carriers.
Couldn't resist today and to break into my Intrepid that I bought a good week ago...some glueing done like hangar deck, some sponsons on the hull and the supports for the angeled deck. Not much yet...
I have also started to look at Interpid pics in her SCB-125 apperance. I personally find the two colored flight deck as shown in the instructions a bit strange...I know it's authentic! Now I have this picture that shows an all dark gray deck, also the large (later) radom behind the island and what look to be an attack wing on deck. Does anybody know when and where that picture was taken? Next thing...the island and the nice markings on it that are not on the decal sheet. I saw a post that someone here makes them? I would be greatful for a tip or for the artist to send me a PM.
I think this picture shows the 1966 deployment since it was the only one with purely attack capacity on board. 1967 and 68 Intrepid also had a Crusader detachment on board...and in 1968 there were also no more Skyraiders involved. The kit's airwing is hence only fiting for the 1967 deployment.
Sometime about 1968, Intrepid and some other Essex class ships had a boxy electronic countermeasures station added high up on the starboard side of the island. It shows up well in this photo. It's presence affects the path of much of the exterior cabling, piping and the numerals "11". Note the addition of a gantry-like truss fixed to its side.
The kit island does not have that box...so it's a pre 68 Yankee Station. The 68 CVA cruise pics clearly already show the box...and also the harsh deck painting! I guuess some more research has to go into that kit!

Is it possible that a kit producer for once had a look at plans? Would be a novum...too bad they did not pay enough attention on the real thing! The picture is just a cropped view...and shrunk to forum limits. The original is almost 30M large!
The item you've discussed (in the red box) is the ULQ-6 ECM enclosure & sensor framework (the sensors have all been removed). This probably would have been added in the mid-1960s as it is quite similar to the ones we had installed in NEW JERSEY (BB-62) in 1967-69. Here is a photo of her in Long Beach 1981 prior to her modernization:

I could have a look at the GA plans I have for CV-9, 10, 11, 34 and 38 only today.
Only CV-34 and 38 plans show the feature.
CV-9, 10 and 11 plans are as your CV-18 one.
Maybe there were at least two sources of GA plans?
In any case, GA plans are not a reliable source for details, they are not meant for that.
Has any one seen a set or own a set of Hull Lines for the Essex class after the hull modifications. I would love to get my hands on a copy of them. I build 1/96 scale models and would love to modify a Essex hull in 1/96.

The decals should work fine; they're generally accurate (although I have a few detail differences with them), and between it and the kit sheet (which has some odds and ends that may be helpful) you will be able to cover everything. The island will work but Model Monkey makes a 3D-printed island specifically for Hornet, with all details specific to that ship:
