I also see that Five Star also makes a short 8cm/23.5 (3-in) gun. Some of the sub-chasers had these in lieu of the 40mm Pom-Pom or the 3rd Year Type 8cm/40.

Hi

Im trying to build the Five Star Type 1 Submarine Chaser

I have a question, is the deck all steel? Or is it with linoleum or even wooden deck?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I can tell, the deck was all steel.

I like these little sub-chaser kits. As soon as I can get my desk re-cleared off, I hope to finish the three I had started (and nearly finished before my cat chewed them - I had to order replacement PE from Rainbow and Five Star).

The Five Star kits are a bit sturdier than the Rainbow kits, as well.

But, from my reference materials, it looks like the decking is all steel. It had the tread-pattern on some of them.

Hi

Im stumped at the instructions of thw five star models for their Type 1 Submarine chaser. The instructions call for a dual gun mount but does not indicate where to put them, although obviously at the bow but i cant find enough references that indeed there was a gun mounted there.

Forgive me for the ignorance but are these sub chasers un armed except for their depth charges?

Thanks

They typically had single dual 40mm Vickers Automatic Guns (similar to the British Pom-Pom, but only two guns, side-by-side).

These were known as the 40mm/62 (1.575") "HI" Type 91:

Image

Sorry that there isn't a better image of one of these that I can easily track down.

Some ships would have the 8cm/40 (Actual 7.62cm or 3") 3rd Year Type, 11th Year Type, or Type 88:

The 8cm/40 was found mostly on the later Type Sub-Chasers, such as the No. 13-class and No. 28-class. But I can swear that I can see one on one of the No. 4-class Sub-Chasers (But it could also be a board).

But Sub-Chaser #1 had the 40mm Vickers gun, and later had it replaced by a dual version.

No one makes a decent one, and I have had to scratch-build them out of styrene (I do have a 3D file for the gun, but have yet to get it printed due to a computer failure that I have yet to fix).

Thanks a lot Matthew!

So the 40 mm is a single gun variant for the early or i stick with the kit supplied dual 40mm for the late? TIA

intending to depict the CH 1 or CH2 assisting the invasion of Aparri in '42

As far as I can tell, that isnt a PE "HI Type 91 dual-40mm that comes with the No. 1 Sub-Chaser, but rather a plain-old Type 96 25mm or Type 93 13mm twin-AA Gun Mount.

That was one of the reasons I started with my No. 13 Sub-Chasers, as they had the 8cm guns, which Five Star makes proper models for.

I haven't the kit yet but from the layout it seems the No.1 kit has the 40 mm gun.
It looks similar to the one supplied in the No.53 kit.

I think those are just Type 93 or 96 AA Guns (13mm or 25mm).

I haven't seen anything in any of the kits that looks like the 40mm Pom-Pom.

I've built one out of Styrene, and the base to one of the 80mm AA Guns from Five Star.

Good shot of the 40mm on what looks like one of 251 class.

Hi all,

Im curious if anyone knows the colors of these ships? Deck, hull, superstructure.
I have the Rainbow No 28 I'm about to start and am hoping for some guidance towards paint.

Thanks,
Clair

Hulls and treaded metal decks are grey. From what I can see of the kit ( http://www.rainbowmodel.com/proshow.asp?proid=211 ), the decking is all treaded, which means no linoleum coverings.

Thank you Dan,

That's what I was thinking but I'm no specialist in IJN in the least.
Reference material on these boats seems very lacking when compared to other nations.

Thanks,

Clair
