Hi Guys, I hope you have all paid your fees to Cadman,

We are having a change tonight from planking, on ID we have some metal decks, I never like just painting over ply or plastic, I like to plate my decks, some times with cardboard but this time a new technique with the litho plate,

Looking like batman, this is the deck pattern of the rear superstructure when cut out, it is turned over and marked off like 8ft x 4ft sheets of steel, then it is scribed on the back lightly.

Next it is glued down using contact adhesive.

Combings are cut round the edge, at the back of the turret I have shown some riveting.

Opposite side.

This is the shape of the upper deck.

Turned over and a fold put in to it,

Fitted in place and glued down, now you can see where the fold went.

An overall view of the structure with the three turrets.

With this method you could plate a modern ship if you took your time, and would look effective.

Hi Guys, This is a follow on from last night, which went down like a lead balloon.

I have continued plating the other decks and a few other things, not a lot of text tonight.

Hi Guys, Middle-watch sent in a working party and got a lot of decks painted, and Kenny's 5th turret, so we can now continue in a small way to start work on the 2 smoke stacks.

First we have our litho plate, green on the back, all the marking out is done on the back so when scribed it is raised on the front.

We have the litho rolled up on a small tube, when released it will spring out larger, we also have the lining of the stack, you can see the difference in size.

One lining fitted and glued, one rolled up.

The first one placed in position.

The second one placed in position and checked they are in the upright vertical position with a small set square

Ron I like the idea of you compiling a book on your builds you have the right approch and ability to make the difficult seem easy. In a sentence go for it. There are publishers out their that would most cetainly be interested.

Hi Guys, I will continue with the funnel (smoke stack.)

The next step was to mark and cut out 4 rings .

The inner part was saved and glued on the the base of the stacks.

These were cut out on the vibro saw.

One ring sanded to shape, this is for the top of the stack. Ring fitted in place.

Cut from litho plate and shaped round , this fits inside the ring on top.

Fitted in place.

Steam pipes, made from aluminium and opened up at the top to make a flared opening, 2 brackets fitted.

Stern view, second top cowl fitted, and stack painted.

All top and bottom cowls fitted.

The forward stack had 2 steam pipes, but most of them were encased in a metal trunking, this was made out of a brass box section and super-glued to the stack.

We will continue with the stack.

First the birds nest on the top, made out of wire and soldered.

Scribe a circle and divide it up into 8, at each point drill a hole. Then place each section in and solder.

Fitted in place.

Now we start on the lookout post and search light platform, first stage marked out on 1/64 ply. Cutting the same shape out of litho plate that fits under to re-enforce the structure.

These are the brackets that attach the structure to the funnel. Bent to shape and super glued in place.

First part in place.

This is the floor of the search light platform, drilled ready for handrails and a quick paint, a little easier to do it at this stage, just one coat for now. Fitted in place, also p/e ladder.

Yes I am a keeping a daily watch on your progress on the scratchbuilt model of the IRON DUKE. Incidentally both my grandfathers served onboard the HMS IRON DUKE - my paternal was a steward whilst my maternal was a professional musician who was onboard during the Battle of Jutland. Both my grandparents are following your construction of the ID but from a different plain - both have passed away many many years before I was born.

Your model is a superb, enchanting and a neat model: it is a mirror image of the real ID. Your step-by-step explanation of the various constructional methods supported by the clear pictorial content is a coverage encouraging novice model makers as well as those experienced to start, or change over, to scratch model building. Scratch building gives us the added opportunity of constructing models rarely available in kit form apart from the high level satisfaction. In addition I have to support others who are in full agreement that your works should be published. Should you decide upon this route I assure you that I will be one of your readers.

Besides photographing warships calling at our Grand Harbour, I am also a keen scratch model builder. I have the following waterline models in different state of construction:

1/96 Hunt Clas Escort HMS Cottesmore: awaiting repairs for damage inflicted by my son when a toddler;
1/96 A69 French Corvette: hull and superstructure complete: awaiting fitting out;
1/140 Leander Class Frigate HMS Bacchante F69: hull and superstructure complete: undergoing fitting out;
1/100 Ton Class Minesweeper: Hull and bridge structure substantially complete also undergoing fitting out;
1/100 Tripartite Class Minehunter: Hull being readied as master for mould purposes. My intention is to construct various Tripartites in service with the various navies.

Admiral Ron please keep up the good work going - I shall continue to watch closely on the ongoing progress.

Hi Guys, We will carry on after we were so rudely interrupted, we are going to make the stanchions that hold the look out post in place. Also the blacksmiths work shop and the main derrick support.

First we mark out on a piece of wood the shape we require. Then I cut and bent at the bottom some brass, a little thicker than the litho plate.

Then I cut some strips of litho and super glued them in place. Next I cut all the strengthening sections. Starting in the middle, I again super glued the oblongs in place. Then along the top and bottom.

When set hard they were bent over a roll of cardboard to form the shape.

They were then glued in place and painted.

Now we come to the blacksmiths workshop. I cut out all the parts required, all measurements are doubled from my 1:192 scale drawings.

Gluing together the balsa on to my litho base. Next I bent to shape the litho to form the outside.

The structure placed in position.

Next I drilled a hole though the roof, the base, the deck and fitted a large section of round brass.

This is the main upright for the boat cranes, you can see it in the background on the drawings.

Hi Guys, We are going to make a water tank , a walkway round the funnel and the control platform to the boat davits,

First I marked out the litho plate. Then I cut it out and folded it.

Then I glued it all together, added air vents and placed in position.

First three U sections were cut, the two smaller ones are glued together, the third is ready to be glued in place.

All glued together and the steps formed at the bottom.

Hi Guys, I am going to start on the fighting tops.

This time I am using Evergreen plasticard, I first mark out the shape of the top of the supports. Then I drill in to each corner and cut out each section with a #11 blade.

Mark out for box that fits under the fighting top and glue in place.

Next mark out and drill support sections, these are then folded in half.

All sections done and glued in position.

Deck level fitted with mast hole drilled, and ladder access cut out. Arm and support for forward light fitted

Yardarm drilled and fitted.

Mast tapered and supports cut out.

The base of the look out position has been fitted, made from litho plate and the top ring from plasticard.

Stern shot, still a lot of work to be done and a lot of tiding up to do before painting matt black.

Hi Guys, we continue with the fighting top.

This is the very last structure on the fighting top the observation tower.

I showed the bottom part of this last night, I have put in the supports and formed the roof, this was done out of litho plate, placed over a hollow tube and with a handle of a file rubbed it round and round till it gave the con-curved shape, it was then glued in place.

The whole structure cleaned up and painted matt black.

Placed in position, note the tripod has been painted black down to the correct level.

You know the old saying, we all make mistakes, well while I was looking at the drawings I noticed I had missed out a small cabin that fitted around the main tripod, well how do I fit it. I made it in two halves.

Then fit it round the mast, the tricky part was to get the roof on. I drilled a hole large enough to fit round the main tripod and cut though at the back and slip it round in place

Hi Guys, Not a lot tonight, I just want to show you some nice P/E from my friend Gordon Brooks, it is 1/96 scale ladders, but he does do smaller.

The first 2 folded and fitted in place.

Funnel removed to gain access to the back of the fighting bridge, 3 small platforms cut and glued in place, hand rails will be fitted later, also ladders fitted.

Funnel back in position and 6 ladders fitted.

Overall view of ladders, also you may notice a slight difference to the fighting top, the angle strengtheners under star fish have been trimmed to a sharper angle, all 6, I got a PM from Jim B saying they were more tampered than what mine were. So Jim I have altered them, like I told Jim, when your building a scale R/C model you have to build things stronger, because they soon get knocked and damaged, some time you have to compromise.

Hi Guys, We will continue with the P/E, this time it is water tight doors in 1/96. There are 24 doors and 24 thickening sections with the locking handles. These were �7.50 + p&p

These are hand and foot holds, they fit up the main support for the derricks to gain access to the top, over 40 were fitted.

This shot is not to clear, you can just see them in place, also 8 incline ladders fitted, handrails will be fitted later.
